Dont think they would pass the farm assurance cutting the male calfs ball sack off to castrate it without any sedation but that aside its a good watch.

Watched it on tv once and they just cut the lot off, some get a dab of tar. Long may they continue there old ways away from the vegan mafia and the rules and regs brigade that drive up costs of production putting firms out of business.

Is tar that much cheaper than a ring? I tag and ring at birth, which complies with rules as regs and isn’t really any cost. Cutting of the ball sack sounds unnecessarily cruel.

Years ago the old man used to do it at dehorning probably at least two weeks of age and older. Two cuts on the sack and pull the stones out, anaesthetic for the head but none for the nuts! Quick rub with some dettol and job was a good’un, not saying it was right by any means and we obviously use rings as close to birth as possible now but the calves never really showed any pain or kicking at the time.
The thing that makes me wonder is if we have an undescended nut or one slips the net we get the vet out to do them and they don’t half struggle and kick with the anaesthetic he uses. Looks far more painful than they way the old boy did it.

A few years ago when we were TB testing, I asked the Vet to castrate a yearling that we'd missed.

When we got him into the crush (the calf, not the vet) the vet bent down at the rear end, where I thought he would be injecting a local anaesthetic.

But he wasn't. He quickly re-appeared, with a scalpel in one hand and two balls in the other. The calf never flinched.
