I tried one last year for a week it was ok but didn't grab the net and plastic every time so was ok for splitting a bale onto the ground but not so good for going straight into a mixer wagon and it wouldn't cut very dry haylage bales

Mine cuts dry haylage bales fine, it is a bit of an art to position it over the bale to make sure that it grabs enough of the film and net but easy enough when you have done a few.

It tends to hold onto an armful of haylage when the rest has fallen in the trough or feeder.

You need more height above it than you might think.

I don't use it in some sheds as the roofs are too low and I think it encourages

waste through the barriers.

I use it on my newest shed and it is just perfect there, no worries about dropping a whole bale on calves heads etc.

Thanks what are they like for wet odd shaped bales
Wasn't too bad you just had to pick your place for picking it up but worked as well on a bad shaped bale as a good one

The main reason we didn't get one was the height thing as we were hoping to just load directly into the mixer wagon but I only have a JCB 3cx digger where it was going to be used and as the pic above you need a telehandler to do anything more than 5 or 6 ft high

Thanks I haven't got a feeder wagon only got a tractor and loader but only feed in ring feeders and against barrier's do u think that hight would be a issue

I’m sure I’ve seen an advert from Tanco recently about the bale slices saying to ring for a demo. Not sure if they would arrange direct or through the local dealer.

I think the keltec one that cuts from the bottom up looks good doesn't seem to need the same height and looks like it forces the wrap and net into the catcher. Never tried one does anyone else have one.

So you end up with a pile of wet/dirty plastic with net tangled amungst it with some bits of silage as well [emoji57] a lot easier to cut the plastic of first( Stanley knife preferred) I do all the bales I need plastic off first then put them near where they need to be with the bedding bales for each shed/pen, clear up the plastic into recycling bin then feed/bed cutting nets off as I go and keep them in a separate bin/bag, far cleaner/tidier and probably quicker way of doing it

It is not quite that bad, I feed some by taking wrap off first and some with the Tanco.

Even taking into account the time that it takes to pick up the wrap and net and carry the spare silage to the feeder the Tanco is miles quicker particularly dropping a bale into a ring as it is quite tricky to pick the net off once you are over the ring especially if there are 10 hungry cows trying to help.
