Tax relief for agricultural workers

Hi
Are there any tax reliefs a farm employee on PAYE basis claim?
I'm wondering if tax relief can be applied to, for example, work clothing, footwear, work use of personal mobile phone, tools......anything else?

Yeh, all deductible as business expenses. But you have to be running a business. So not possible as a PAYE employee.

Not a good enough excuse to go self employed either. Farmers don't appreciate the financial risk that SE workers take on, so don't pay accordingly. Also, most jobs don't meet the requirements of self employment anyway.

Easiest thing to do, if the boss doesn't already buy you gear, is ask if you can work something out with your employer so they reclaim the VAT and you pay them the balance. Not 100% sure on how that would be put through the books, so it may require a very amenable employer...

Our team get footwear, overalls, shirts, warm tops and coats, plus waterproofs and obviously any PPE that they or we think is necessary.

I should clarify, I'm well looked after by my employer, so me providing my own work wear, phone, etc, is fine by me. Its just can I claim any of the expense I incur against tax?

Ask your employer to buy them and reduce your wages to pay for them............then you won't pay so much tax !

Careful, I'm fairly sure that they are taxable benefits if they're not fitted with prominent logos. Obviously not the PPE, but general clothing would be.

Employer is certainly required to for weather protective clothing necessary for the job.
For a stock person that means employer has to provide waterproof coat/leggings and wellies and replace when no longer fit for purpose.

They may be required to, it certainly never happened when I still lived there though.
Must ask my brother what he gets, as he's still a farm worker there.

Well looked after but you subsidise him by using your own phone and paying for work related clothing and PPE?

Unless he never pays tax, he won't be out of pocket by buying that sort of stuff for you.
