TB costs

My vets based 10 mins from me (Ely area) have just sent a letter saying for various reasons they are no longer working with the people that organise TB tests in their area (eastern counties) and the gist of it is its not financially viable for them...they will still do it privately however.

I've now got another letter saying my next TB test will be done by a vet from Norwich!! Which doesn't seem very financially viable for them either lol.

For the ministry, vets are paid on a sliding scale. X for up to 5 cattle, Y for 20, Z for 50 and then upwards.
When testing was tendered for, England's XL vets dropped their price to Defra by about 30 per cent, to keep another big practice out. (or so I'm told) Wales got their heads together and their price remained about the same and Scotland got 30 per cent more.

For private testing all vets seem to have different prices and it depends on the call out fee too. Two visits plus so much per head is what our vets charge.
They too are struggling with the new system, and all the extra paperwork which falls to them as well. Pay peanuts, get monkeys?

This is for a 90 day test on a grazing AFU, the past two tests I have been sent my vet practice's professional testers, nice people, but unable to complete the test in what I consider a timely fashion.
I am going to meet with them in the near future, as I am not satisfied with the service they are providing.
I want to stay with my vet practice as in all other aspects of my farm work they are excellent.
I would like to have the same person each test as it speeds up the job considerably when they know what is going on, where the cattle are coming from etc.

XL vets are about to re tender at an even lower rate than they currently are contracted to do, most vets are now paying lay people to do the testing as they cant afford to have a fully qualified vet doing Tb testing and only earning £40/50 an hour which is quite understandable.

Apparently XL vets are working along the lines of tendering as low as possible and then charging farmers to make up the shortfall.

This needs to cover traveling and cost associated with that and administration and holidays and all other cost that has to be covered for an employee
