TD5 Discovery won't start

I'm at a bit of a loss.
Generally Google has the answer but not this time, I ain't joining a Landy forum, hence posting here...

2000 TD5 Discovery.
Drove to where it is, next morning wouldn't start.

Fuel pump does not run when you turn the key on, yet will go into its priming cycle when you press the throttle 5 times.
I've bridged the pump relay with a wire and it still doesn't start.

Fires on brake cleaner.

No codes on nanocom, but does not show an engine rpm when cranking.

I don't see how a knackered crank sensor would stop the fuel pump from priming??

Ideas please!

On some TD5 models, oil runs from the head down the inside of the loom that comes out of the rocker, all the way into the ecu, we had a TD5 Defender here, couldn't get it to start regularly, sometimes it would fire and then others it would spin over for ages before firing and again, then it might not fire after minutes on the starter, we had young farmers meeting in the garden one night and the lads were on it and sprayed brake cleaner into the sockets on both ends of the loom to wash the oil out, it fired immediately, but it was a known fault and not a permanent cure. Worth a look maybe.

Injector loom is fairly recent and all connections are free from oil.

I can’t explain that either but we had td5 trouble. Changed all sorts is stuff and it turned out to be a duff starter making the crank sensor lose its sh1t. Turned over fine and you wouldn’t know there was anything wrong but put a new one on and off it went no problem.

We repair quite a few PSA diesels and we have had crank wear take/float the crank too far away from the sensor. PSA stuff injects fuel when the sensor is triggered and they were not getting the burst of fuel, but like yours would start and run on rake cleaner, but would never start without it.

Fuel pressure sensor? Ours used to be a pig to start until this was changed.. could try disconnecting/bridging the wire to it see what that does?

You mention pump relay? The yellow ones wherever they are on a Disco? There’s two or three under the seat on a Defender, have seen them play up snd pump won’t run, a tap or a wiggle will get you going. IIRC last one was dirty or loose connectors on the loom plug. If the pump is not running they won’t make any attempt at running will they.

If youve got no rpm figure during cranking - 180 - 250rpm, repair the no -cas signal issue then go from there. Presume you've checked *ALL* ecu power feeds, constant and switched.

Do they stop pumping when up to pressure? Maybe take the pipes off and see if it pumps then?

I'still plumping for the knackered starter (even though it sounds good)

After you changed the crank sensor - are you seeing cranking speed of over 300 on the nanocom? Make sure your battery is fully charged and also put a booster pack on it. If the crank speed is too low the ECU will not fire the injectors.
