Tedder trouble! (Kuhn 8 rota)

Any tips on getting a Kuhn 8 rotor tedder to spread grass evenly?

The whole instruction book gives two lines of setting advice which isn't much use!

All it wants to do is put the crop back into rows between the rotas! We have tried steeper/shallower angle, faster/slower PTO, faster/slower ground speed.
The only thing we have got to work is PTO speed of less than 300rpm at about 6-8kph but at that speed we would be better of with our old 4 rota Lely! It is a very heavy ryegrass crop, but surely it can go faster than that?

Any tips/settings would be much appreciated as Kuhn haven't been much help. Thanks

No, fixed tines so only one position, it could do with letting go of the crop sooner to throw the hay backwards rather than back into a row. We could alter angle on our Lely which worked well.
Guessed not. It was only something that crossed my mind.

You sure you haven't got the "windrow" optional reduction gearbox? I know that something like that is available for my 4 rotor kuhn. Faster it spins the more it should spread it. Have you tried it of 540E? I have found that the type and density of grass does make a huge difference to how it behaves. Tilting the whole machine forward or back by changing top-link length may also make a big difference.

Thanks, we normally ted in 540 economy, but yesterday to get the slower pto speed we went into normal 540 to get the power. . .
Interesting to hear about a slower gearbox, don't think we want to send the rotors any slower tho as it will not pull the crop apart as well . . .

Firstly, don,t go to fast, if its heavy crop the machine needs time to clear it self,
Also, try and drive so the rotor splits the swath, this will help the even spread,
don,t over rev the tractor and run at 540 max or even 480 on heavy crops should be enough.

Are you spreading out the sward with the mower . Narrow swards are hard for a Tedder yo turn out even .

Thanks, this crossed our minds, rows aren't spread full width but only just get tractor wheels between them.
To check this we spread it out evenly with our Lely then put the Kuhn through it again and it still sent it into rows. . .

Thanks, the mower used actually got 4 rows down the middle of the rotors so couldn't fault that this time, will be using a bigger mower in the future so only 3 rows which may cause problems . .

PTO speed ended up at 300rpm and 8kph forward speed but at those speeds we think it's doing more stiring than turning.

What ground speed do ppl expect to ted at? We used to be able to ted upto 14kph on Lely and still do a good job, I was hoping for 10-12?

Was going at 12.3 kph yesterday with my little 4 row Kuhn, straight into mower rows. about 450 rpm. Nice even spread. Off to do it now so for second time.

I’m down at 6k with vicon 6 rotor for first pass anyway. It gives it time to tease a massive row of grass apart. Biggest crops Iv seen this year and it’s really making our baler work to bale after it’s been raked back up.
