TEF 20 Grey Fergie, Gears - Selectors etc.

Hi,

I have recently bought a tef 20 fergie and the gear selector has broke, just wondering how i can fix this, I managed to unscrew the gear stick to have a look inside, and the selector-rods inside the tranmission, i noticed that one of them i could move with my finger and was able to slide the horseshoe shaped selector up and down a few inches each way, i tried to take a pic but not that clear, i have found a better pic on google and have attached that as it shows it better, the item marked on the google imager as rails 1-2 ~(which selects gears 1 and 2), appears to be broken as this rail can be moved back and forth with my hand and doesn't have any resistance and doesn't click into any of the gears just slides either way and can be slid back again. The other rails are in neatural and cannot be moved with hand without puttuing gearstick back on and work correctly.

Any help or advise would be greatly appreciated. :)

The lock wired pin hasnt come out or sheared has it?? Sometimes if they are not used for a while the metal shafts seize in the alloy housing, steel and alloy dont get on without lubrication and the alloy goes powdery and will seize the shaft. Most people will then take the gear lever off and use a punch and hammer to free them off, sometimes resulting in the locking pin being sheared off in the process. The selector and shaft should move together along with the bronze gear shifter further forward on the shaft.
I suspect that will be the problem, not heard of the bronze selector breaking before but guess it could happen.
Other than that there isnt a lot to go wrong with them, unless one of the bearings has broken up and dropped the lower set of gears but I would expect you would hear some unpleasant noises in use and no gears at all.
They are very easy to strip out and rebuild (once you get the nack) but am unsure on the availability of the bronze selectors, I think one is available but not the other for some reason but have never had to replace one.

Just keep in mind the other selectors have to be in neutral for any one to be able to move as there is a lock between the selectors you cant see. So if you put the "free rail" into neutral the other rails might be just as free to move?
Any movement in the "rail" should move the selector, if not you have a problem.
Should be obvious after a head scratch, whats not moving for you?
I'm not a fan of stripping gearboxes unless absolutely necessary, so proceed with care and caution.

If its the selector fork itself that's broke you will have to move the other selector shafts and forks to get enough room to lift the broken selector out and the new (full size one) back in.
