Hello everyone,

My names Lindsey and I work for TER - The Equipment Register, we have been established for over 20 years and have the largest database in Europe of theft and ownership records for plant and agricultural equipment.

I came across this forum and thought it would be a great way to be able to talk to you guys directly, to better understand whats going on in the farming community, what your thoughts were on carrying out due diligence and how we can all better tackle thefts?

What are your views about us as a company if you've dealt with us before?

What do you currently do to protect your investments?

Is there more that we can be doing?

Are you aware of all of our services?

Have you experienced a theft? If so, what happened? Did you get a recovery?

All information, feedback and general conversation is really useful :)

We want to hear from you.

Thanks
Lindsey

Haven't heard about you until I just Googled your company now.

What do you currently do to protect your investments?
Remove keys, locked in secure barns, farmyard locked, CCTV etc.

Is there more that we can be doing?
As above wasn't sure what it was you were doing anyway. Having browsed your website I would say its a fairly comprehensive service.

Are you aware of all of our services?
As above.

Have you experienced a theft? If so, what happened? Did you get a recovery?
Luckily no.

Hi all,

Thanks for taking some time to respond.

So for those of you that don't know who we are below is a brief outline of who we are and what services we provide (if you haven't already checked out our website)

The Equipment Register have been established for over 20 years and we have the largest database in Europe of theft and ownership records for plant and agricultural equipment. We are the sister company of The Art loss Register and The Watch Register who are both the lead detection registries for stolen art and watches in the world.

Our services:

Check it - Check any used plant and agricultural equipment before purchase to ensure that it doesn't have any outstanding theft or finance records. This applies to anyone who is about to purchase used, but our clients consist of Auction houses, dealerships, hire companies and members of the public such as yourselves.

Report it - As well as reporting to the police and your insurance we ask that you make us aware as well, it's completely free to do so and can been done online or over the phone. Although we receive data from the major insurance company and manufacturers it's important that you also report to us to ensure that we have the most up to date and complete picture.

Register it - Registering your ownership, much like you would the ownership of your car is extremely useful should your equipment be stopped by the police or a port, it may even end up at an auction and it helps to increase the chance of recovery. Plus it's completely free to do so.

Secure It - We offer advice and have specially trained employees that come from policing backgrounds or have history within the industry to help give advice on the best ways to secure your investment.

Value it - We offer a service from a partner company in which you can have your equipment compared and valued against 80,000k different makes and models giving accurate costs/sales prices based on various factors from all over Europe.

Recover it - Should we locate a stolen item that belongs to you we are happy to work with you to arrange recovery or advise a 3rd party to help with the recovery.

Not enough people check the origins of their purchases, meaning that it's increasingly easy for stolen machinery to be moved around without the chance of recovery for the owner, obviously a lot of this is shipped abroad but there is still a vast number that stays in the UK.

1 in 11 checks that we do conduct come back as a stolen match, that's quite a big figure and i'm sure that would get bigger the more people took the time to check.

The industry is starting the fight back and there are some great security features out there such as Datatag and GPS trackers who have had a great impact in reducing the numbers of thefts however more can be done.

More and more scams are taking place online, people are paying for equipment they have never seen to people they have never met for instance. Also cloning is becoming a big problem, has anyone every had an issue with cloning or noticed that their serial number plate has gone missing and thought nothing of it? Chances are it's been taken for cloning, you can report that to us as well, we'll make a note on our systems.

I don't think anything in the industry is completely full proof but I think the more people do as individuals the harder it will become.

P.S If you do take a look at our website please don't be put off, we are getting a new and improved version very shortly and I cant wait :)
