Where do people reckon fat price will be in a years time? Anyone buying calves has a gamble now

In 12 months time fat price will be approx the same as now. Maybe a touch dearer imo.

Just basing it on forward contract prices for 12 months from now. They aren't vastly different to now so I presume the processors are predicting prices will be similar but would always offer a conservative value rather give more than they have to. But 12 months is a long time.
What base are abp on for cows?

Couldn't tell you I'm afraid I've not killed any cows since pre-Christmas.

Hasn't that ever been the way?! I'm guessing a lot have been bought just because they wanted the cattle and that was the trade, rather than actually doing too many sums. Sometimes you just have to go with it and hope for the best otherwise you've got nothing and it's too late. Still a dangerous game to play.

The price of barley and other cereals would surely have encouraged people to buy store cattle. I used to hear a few buyers telling me they had heaps of feed value cereals that in a bad trade couldn’t be sold to any real advantage unless put through cattle
