the old lads been get a bit stiff in the back legs of an evening , anybody tried magnetic collars ? Or anything else to help him out , we all get old one dayView attachment 1123832
Have used magnet collar on a few, seems to have some positive effect on them. Also could try yumove tablets, meant to be a natural anti inflammatory thing.

My right hand boy, shadow and confidant of 11 and a half years has died this afternoon after a brief illness.

Life will be harder now he's gone and I'm devestated. My girls helped me lay him to rest this evening and we all had a good cry.

His understudy isn't really ready but we'll both have to learn on the job!

Good boy. That'll do. View attachment 1127575

I cried when I read your post. I know the loss and grieve for yours.

Thankyou all for your sympathies. Very kind of you. I had a chat with my aunt in Australia yesterday.. she lost her husband AND her dog in recent years so was able to offer significant wisdom. She told me that my Uncle who was a tough cattle and sheep farmer was almost destroyed when he had to make the fateful decision to put his best dog down because of illness..

So I feel no shame for feeling the way i do and being a bit tearful as i pass some of our favourite spots or do something that we both used to do.

Rising from the visceral pain of the loss I am begining to look forward again.

There were a number of errors i made in the early life of Merlin. He wasn't very well socialised but mellowed with age.

His training was largely on the job as those of use who own collies know that in most cases it's a matter of learning how to direct thier inherrent skill set rather than atually teaching them to do something. He was very capable doing it the way he knew..most of the time if i interviened too abrubtly he'd go on strike...

For my next collie I want to make sure he is trained better and hope to avoid the pitfalls of a dog that -like Merlin finds tyres rotating - especially quad bikes and tractors- alluring. I live in pembrokeshire and there must be schools for working dogs that will help me set the next friend off on in the right direction.

Anyone got any recommendations?

Also, health cover. I have no idea what led to his untimely demise but he was seen by a vet last Friday and 6 hours before our headlong charge into Carmarthen as he declined sharply . The vets he saw prior to the emergency were very superficial and esp on Monday when Merlin was struggling. The original diagnosis was a lung infection/ pneumonia. That did not tally with what the vet said on Monday night..

So are there health policies that are rather like Bupa .. these would cover check-ups and regular care options? How do you guys protect your best mates and working pets..?
