The farming view on this?

This just turned up (unsolicited) in my inbox. But despite some sympathy for the outgoing tenants, I can't help feeling that this petition isn't a positive step.

Would be interested to have your take on this.

edited to say, I hope it is OK to post this here, especially as these people tend to spam you. (2nd time they've ended up in my inbox and I have never knowingly joined them or asked for information). If it isn't OK, apologies, and maybe admin will remove.

Dear Elaine,

An East Lothian family are being driven off their farm one month before Christmas. Andrew, Claire and their three children have farmed at Colstoun Mains for 22 years and have made over £500,000 worth of improvements to the land. But their landlord, a laird, has decided to evict them. The family believe he’s doing it to raise the rent. [1]

38 Degrees member Michelle isn’t prepared to let this happen and has started a campaign to stop the eviction. Already nearly 2000 of us have signed the petition and the campaign’s hit the papers. If enough of us join in now, we might just be able to force the government at Holyrood to step in and helpbefore the family are evicted.

If you think the Stoddard family deserve to stay in their home, then please sign the petition. It’ll only take a few seconds:

SIGN THE PETITION

Here’s what Michelle says:

"The Stoddart family are an integral part of the community. Andrew and Claire are well liked, and their 3 children go to the local school.

Once evicted, the Stoddart family will be forced to move from the local area, laying off their two employees, and taking their children away from school and friends.

They are to be given very little recompense for the investments they have made over their lifetime, leaving them both homeless and unable to buy a farm elsewhere."

Are they? Haven't seen that thread. That might give a bit more background than the rather weak arguments on the petition itself.

Sounds like an excuse to get people's email addresses, signatues, etc, which they can then
a) sell on;
b) copy onto other petitions / sites which you did not intend, and which may be something which you would not be in agreement with ;

And so on...

Basically a scam I suppose.

So are they proposing that they should be allowed to hold a tenancy for as long as they wish?
That makes no sense to me, unless I've got it wrong
