The telegraph poles rot from the middle where the creosote didn't reach. I tip a load of creosote on the top when I put them in, but I wonder if the creosote we can buy today is as potent as the stuff these posts were pickled in?
If it's proper coal tar creosote then it would be the same.

If I cap any posts I just use flashing tape/flashband. Works well enough.

Half arsed amateur job, don't look too closely 😄. Will need to prop the gate posts (bad practice I know, I know) and add a strand or two of electric on top. Old Gate was busted by tourists and 🐕 walkers so had enough! Tjep gun is great, heavy though.

It always interests me the way you Scots always put a plain wire next to the pig netting, I never see that here in Wales
I’ve seen a fence down a field with a gate and in the middle of it, the stretch above it had a top line on the netting, the bottom stretch didn’t as they ran out. Both had one run or barb above it. The stretch without the top plain had taken a hammering from cattle putting their heads between the barb and the netting, the stretch with the plain running along with the top of the netting was hardly touched, just that bit stronger and harder to push down.

I have stopped using barb for that reason fences lasting longer without barb and if top wire goes slack it can be tightened easier

I like your jubilee clipped net on the gate.👍

Not keen on the barbed wire above the gate, could be lethal if you hit it while on the quad.

The 1.6mm ht barb is truly useless, I use either the 2mm ht or mild stuff, and put two runs of it where I think cattle would be a hassle, but more recently have been puting a 2.5mm ht hot wire up, that would be best by miles

1.6mm HT is a replacement for 2.5mm mild barb. Both horrible stuff.
2mm HT barb is the goto or electric like you say.

Barbed wire over the gate won't be staying, waiting on anti climb paint for the top of the gate, also I'll stone the quad path and the barb might interfere with something brought up by trailer.

Saved a bit of money with the clips, only heavy duty gates are fully sheeted around here €290 versus €135 for that gate and €55/sheet and a few clips. Was going to get it welded on initially.

Our cheviots are rubbing on the fences, wrapping wool on the ryelock net! Did I read on here that a plain wire run half way up helps stop it sticking on the net?
might just run an electric wire if not.

What sort of posts are those John?

5 & 6 foot recycled plastic posts from Next Generation Plastics in Co. Meath, they have a 40 year guarantee. They're an impressive post in the flesh, they'd want to be for €13 & €14, but I figure over the long term they are worth the cost in terms of labour and general hassle of replacing timber posts.
