Further to my post above the Little IH Hydro 454 is now online at UK Auctioneers (Robert Bell Auctions) Lot 534 I have been using her in the last few days to flail my conservation areas. She is a good little tractor that could be restored as there are so few left intact in my opinion.

Going to view 856 xl plus what to check and look out for. Done 9000 hrs but looks tidy and original

I guess they are very similar to the 956 so I would be checking the handbrake function and the 4wd is not permanently engaged. You need to have the tractor warmed up to check the latter. Look round the seams on the cab and check the bottom of the front pillars have not been bodged.

I am not familiar at all with the 856 , the only advice I can give is don't pay too much

Handbrake, check that it stays out of 4wd, front axle pivot is not worn and that it doesn't jump out of gear

Make sure the transmission low oil pressure light comes on and go out. IIRR the warning light works via a timed relay so that it does not flash on every time you dip the clutch but will come on after a period of time with the clutch depressed.

Went too see a 856 xl plus today. Not overly impressed. Currently have 2 895s stock man and xl Duo. Im thinking now would i be better looking for a 4240 xl pro as its a model range im more familiar with

The 56 series in some ways is more old fashioned but it will be a heavier and stronger machine than the Doncaster built.

Had both a 4230 and 844 at same time had the 4230 three years wasn’t great the 844 fifteen years brilliant the 56 range are one of the best

Been told the case 4240 arent really a 40k box just the same as a high ratio box in the 95 series which is 35k?????

My uncle's 4230 reads 22.5mph on the dash display going full tilt.

I would imagine many Case IH owners who have the XL cab would recognise this repair!!

I guess at least the frame has not rusted away. I have squirted oil into the door bottoms on our one for the last 25 years. Also squirt oil into the front cab frame.
