I have a nose that does exactly same thing......and ears....you can usually tell if somethings not quite right

I've often thought they'd be handy things to have around but to be really useful the actual temperature in Deg C would be a huge advantage, but I'm guessing the distance from the heat source would need to be established before that can be calculated.

A FLIR will do that.

As will a cheap infra red thermometer

I find mine invaluble,today it found a very warm wire,other day i found a blockage in underfloor heating ,(saved digging whole floor up ),found a leak on a air conditioner.mainly for spotting cold spots ,and leaks, found the thermostat was stuck on the digger ,a milloon uses

Yes, I have been using my Seek Compact Pro to perform a regular home inspection. You can even use them for plants, for example by looking at the surface temperature which according to Google "is often more important than air temperature". However I have not tried it in those use cases. If it's your first camera, i'd maybe suggest going for an iphone thermal imager or an android one, they seem to offer more value in terms of image resolution. But for like a large scale inspection, a drone would be better suited.
