Re the power of grinders, drills etc.
A 4.5 inch grinder has an 800w motor or thereabouts, that's 1 horsepower, a 7 or 9 inch grinder has somewhere between 2000w and 2400w . That's 2.5 to 3 horsepower.
To put this in perspective I read somewhere that competitors in the world's strongest man can keep up with a 1hp electric motor for about 30 seconds. Food for thought....
When it's put like that the amount of energy in your hands is brought home. Then think of it concentrated on the thin edge of a cutting disc or saw and look at the damage it can do in the blink of an eye... :yuck:

Moved into new house and Mrs og getting organised for new year. Thought we had 8 glasses then realised it was only 4, reflected in the mirror behind the bar!
My old man tells the story of when there was a group of them went to the highland show one year. One bleary eyed morning after a pint or two the night before, down in the hotel having breakfast one of the group keeps looking across the room then back again. After he's done this several times he says to everyone "don't look, but every time I look down there there's some one staring at us." So of course they all turn around and look, just to see the reflection in mirror wall at the other end of the restaurant of them all looking. I think much pee taking ensued.

Got the woodchipper attached to the tractor today but couldn't get the stabiliser legs to work. There is a lot of electronics on it, two joystick with various (unmarked) buttons and a terminal with another bunch of switches. Figured there was an elictrical gremlin somewhere so ended up just teeing in some hydraulic hose and using a valve on the tractor. Got to working, nothing working as I remember. Turned out I simply had the buttons mixed up, I have done over 100 hours on it and just forgot .

From JSTOR Daily How hobbies changed the home :"Today, perhaps the most visible way that historical division presents itself is in our homes. Basements, sheds, and workshops found their way into American homes because these hobbies for men were often loud, smelly, intrusive, and had “a well-deserved reputation for stinks and bangs, as well as for outright danger to life and limb.”
Applies to English homes, also. :inpain:
