Anyone on here can give me a few pointers on checks necessary to get the old dumper running please.

Got ignition and turn over of engine but not firing up.

Also, what is the plug in the photo that should have a cable attached to the end and what is its purpose?

Thank you

Thank you both for your kind and helpful replies thus far. It's a Hatz single cylinder Diesel engine if that changes your thoughts.
That would explain the fins on the head. Doh :D

Doesnt really change much. Any diesel engine needs 3 things to start.

- Fuel
- Compression
- Heat

So long as it’s getting fuel, and the compression is good then it just needs a bit of heat to start. Check the wiring to the glow plug is delivering battery voltage to the glow plug. Also measure the resistance of the glow plug to ensure it’s ok.
