Tine drills on light land

Hi All
Has anyone used or still using a tine drill on light land such as the KV Evo and the like?
My question on these machines is - can you get even depth of seed from every row? Or does the front rows of seed get extra soil on top of them from the back rows?

You should be able to alter the pitch of the drill so the seed depth is even from both front and back coulters. The trouble with light land is softer ground for the depth wheels. Can you consolidate the ground before the drill? Even a crumbler roller on the back of the last cultivator will help.

Even heavier drills with full width press wheels like the Vaderstad Rapid go deeper on lighter ground.

Our Kuhn would always bury itself on light land regardless of it being pressed infront, ended up carrying the weight with the tractor, seed depth was erratic to say the least, what wasn't scattered on top was buried hence why it's been in the shed since the rapids arrived

Used a weaving for the first time in anger this last planting , was to wet at the start of planting so the weaving was hitched up for around half the acreage ,,,,,, I should think I did exactly as you said , buried some of the rows as we had very erratic emergence , not what we are used to anyway , which was a shame as I really wanted the tine drill to work ,,,,, just in the process of buying another vaddy

Neighbour has a front press on when drilling light land with a KV Evo, i assume it's to even up the seedbed before drilling. Before then other neighbour used to crop the same land and drill it with a 6m Carier tine drill (not Vaderstad) always use to come and harrow behind it with a 12m set of trailed harrows as i think he always used to lay the seed on top abit

We drill a lot of light ground with a weaving 6m tine still,
No problem here, just light powerharrow or toptilth in front of it

Have made previously and then run a tine drill at home now for 10 yrs and key is level and firm they don't need the seed bed that a suffolk coulter would by any means but they need abit more than you can get away with with a Vaderstad etc. but where they come into there own is in the wet when the vaderstad won't run any more as they don't maul it in to the same extent as a combi can.

One farm in the area uses a KV evo, it has very uneven emergence and early post em the crops look awful. They replaced a rapid with it to drill late after spuds and beet.

Another neighbour uses a Kuhn megant with a front press and the crops behind that look good.

When dad used to drill with a carrier he would always roll at least once before drilling, it would then leave the fields like a billiards table and emerge very even.

We've had a weaving tine drill for 11 yrs and drilled into all sorts with it. It is a bit uneven emerging but usually down to previous cultivation. After a few days of emergence it evens up and not had any major problems. It does seem to drill the rear rows a bit deeper into lighter soils but never an issue.

KV TS here, as said, secret is firm seedbed; like plough and press on lighter stuff. Sometimes if ploughing muffles and not very level, or on ground that goes hard after rain, a pass of KKK does enough to get good results.
Rolling after drilling helps even up emergence where finished seedbed is uneven in rows due to soil throw off tines.

@Mr Charisma the only problems we've had with our Weaving drill have been drilling rape too deep (we now sow it with a subsoiler & the yield has gone up at least 5 cwt/ac ) and grass seeds - also too deep

Cereals on light land, no problems, it evens itself up within a day or two & we always roll afterwards
