To roll or not to roll?

System overview. Discordon followed by either a double press or rolls. Let it green up, spray then drill and roll. Drill is a Weaving GD.

1st dose of fert just going on the wheat and the 1st real opportunity to look at an entire field. 1st impressions are that we need to go back to dual wheels on our rolling tractor, there are clearly visible wheelmarks on several fields where the tractor with 650 tyres was used. Where the dual 18.4s were used no visible wheelmarks. I think on the heavier land the rolls are needed but on the light land i dont think we need to roll after the GD. The only reason i have been rolling is to get a better field finish for pre em efficacy.

What are other people doing? What are peoples thoughts on rolling after a direct drill in a till situation?

It depends on the quality of the finish. If it still looks like a billiard table then don't bother. Any roughness and it's a no brainer. Ditto if it is sown into dry soil to improve seed-to-soil contact.

Don't forget the effect on slug reduction from a tighter surface layer. If you've got a weed problem that means the pre em has a lot to do then this is another reason to roll to reduce the surface area.

Rolling before it has dried out properly is when we get wheelings showing up. i just seen a 8370rt rolling on heavyland !!!! the results should be visible when it comes up !

Think it will have chitted by the time our clay dries out properly.
Best reason to roll here is to keep the b***** rooks off!
