I think I have got my money's worth out of the old blades? Reckon they will have done about 2000 acres? 6m machine - so have 144 blades to change.

Brought the rotors inside to get away from snow and rain - and to have power and light.

Fitting Nord-lock washers again. Fitted them after first year with the original spring washers which were useless. Could have 10-12 blades loose after 4-5 acres but once I fitted the Nord-lock cut that down to 4-5 loose blades/season. Have been shearing quite a few bolts over the last couple of years but presume that is fatigue. Fitting new 10.9 bolts as well.

Should be a good year to slit a bit deeper to let more air into the ground?

Do you see much improvement on grass growth using one of these. Have always been tempted to try one.

That's hard to answer - I use it more as a soil conditioner.

Bought it after a very wet summer in 2012 and wanted to avoid going back to waterlogged ground and soured-out grass. So maybe as much about not letting grass growth deteriorate - if that makes sense.

I do think it lets air into the soil and takes out some compaction. It is a relatively quick job and I'm pleased that the blades have only cost about£1/acre.

But in the interests of poor science I also started soil-mapping, 5-6 years ago, and pulled the soil pH up from around 5.8 to nearer 6.2, now, across the farm - so that will have helped too.

Have they ever been jetted before? How old are the drains?
I think these were laid on the late 80s early 90s , they are plastic pipes with gravel back fill . They haven’t been touched since they were put in so not surprising their blocked . We have jetted some in this area that were blocked solid and only 5 yrs old , they really need doing every year . It is a very satisfying job but today I can get out of the wind so it’s bloody cold .
