err, looking at that pic, why do you need to do anything ?
Seriously . . .
Why not just plant the beans & save yourself the extra operation, time, compaction & expense ?
What am I missing ?
It’s a fair question, especially looking at your system and conditions.
The last crop was sweetcorn for human consumption. Pigs have been on the ground over the winter but there were a lot of long maize stalks left. In hindsight I should have topped it all but left some as shelter for the pigs. Wet weather means I’ve only been able to plough it in the last few days. A pass with the rolls and cultivator (shallow) dragged shallow stalks to the end of the runs.
We‘re organic, so our only means of weed control is hoeing. This means I need a reasonably firm level seedbed.
We grow small areas compared to you (understatement!) as everything is hand picked. In this case it’s only half an acre. Wide rolls and cultivator, along with a relatively light tractor on wide tyres try to minimise compaction.
The ground is relatively light on a gentle slope with an uncomfortably low organic matter and clay content around 26%.
