I don't think Covid helped people in that age group, telling people to stay locked away for long periods of time can only be bad, but hey the experts know what they are doing.
Nutrition is a big one and largely down to the parents plus is there anything for kids to do these days that involves physical activity? What are the schools doing?
Are there lots of after school sports clubs with parent helpers, are there places for them to go etc.
Covid is blamed for everything lol

Mexico and Brazil have seen the damage obesity has done to western economies and have bought in a sugar tax despite the latter being one of the world’s biggest sugar producers!

Makes you wonder how quickly these countries could climb up the economic growth rankings as their population becomes far healthier!

Walk into a supermarket, not even 5% of shelf space would be raw/unprocessed ingredients, the sooner governments take control back from the likes of Kraft, Cocacola, Pepsi etc the better!

You will never out exercise a bad diet
70% of food in shops is ultra processed crap full of sugar, sugar is the problem
We have been trained to have sugar as a reward unfortunately
It’s actually quite hard to live a normal life and eat a good diet, there is just so much crap everywhere, stop for a snack at the garage, what choice is there? Everything has been loaded with sugar
I have noticed recently I can’t buy clothes anymore, they are all so baggy around the belly

I would say my generation ( I am soon to be 60) seen massive changes, school meals were a choice of maybe two things , we had massive canteens in the shipyard with proper cooked dinner then it all changed , I can remember microwave meals became popular, school meals became burger or pizza, the old chippy in town was dwarfed by maccy d etc
Everyone wants convenience and the big corporates sewn it right up . what was a treat is now the norm

As a tubby lad, I have some sympathy, I was more than tubby when I left school, my diet wasn't particularly bad although I'm sure it wasn't very good either, but with the exception of the weekends I was sat on my arse 6 hours a day from the age of 5 to the age of 17. When I went into my work placement I lost stones in weeks, just from not sitting down. Learning how to work, and how to work hard is something that needs teaching to a lot of folk, learning to enjoy working hard is something you have to learn yourself.

I couldn’t say how to improve childhood and young adult obesity. It’s a large issue. Diet and lifestyle are obviously the two biggest factors but not easy to change in a person, habits already set.

I do actively discriminate against overweight job applicants. Not that they won’t be hired, but it’s significant to consider. They just can’t physically keep up with us for several months if they make it that long and most will not. It’s a lot of effort to train someone as it is, significantly altering one’s physical body while training them is less likely to happen. The ones that do really thrive, had one guy drop 80lbs and kept it off. Many others regularly lose 20-40 lbs after starting here.

How long were the lockdowns for? Just a few weeks in 2020. 2020 was how long ago?

Everyone who wasn't shielding was encouraged to take exercise, too.

As a kid at school 40+ years ago I was on the tubby side.
When I look at school kids today, I'd have measured in at "normal" weight.
Jeez, there are some real health problems heading our way. I reckon there's gonna be a massive hate campaign, kids/parents. Why did you let me get so obese?

Local ag. engineer says 2 years unemployed and get sent on national service, trouble is fat ones would claim disability.
Diet high in upf increases chance of mental health issues by 50%
All that needs to be done is to make being unemployed life more difficult than being employed, too many people take the past of least resistance.

Local council here is threatening to close pools and leisure centres.
Scandalous.
Same here, the libraries too.

There was one of their road fixing gangs got caught parked up sleeping in old quarry by here, just been dumping the materials. Been going on a while.

Got a 10yr old £15mn pool in Dundee that’s falling to bits, closed more than it’s open. Needs to be a bit more accountability in some parts of the public service.

It’s simple really. Way too many calories going in and way too few calories being burned. It’s amazing how much exercise you need to do just to burn off a chocolate bar.

It’s also the poor quality food and calories which result in you feeling hungry very quickly. Good quality meat and veg will keep you full for longer than a processed meal.

Sugar intakes are way too high, and refined sugar is the cause of most people being overweight, combined obviously with laziness.
There's a huge amount of calories in cans of pop and energy drinks, lucozade was a real swine for me, as an apprentice we used to do a morning of running and circuit training starting at a mile and then building to 10 miles by the end of the year, I was always the fat kid at the back so never got past about a mile and a half, used to drink about 2 bottles of that orange stuff after, little did I know it was the one of the things fwcking me over.
