Is it a front linkage, it's hard to tell.

Doesn't look a very big or strong ram cylinder in comparison to the linkage and drawbar pin etc.

Front linkage, yes, it's a small wire basket to collect rubbish, it's a cat2 on a farm force light press.

How did it manage to snap when stationary?
Would certainly of made a mess if it had snapped doing 40k down the road

Yep. 10 series.
1970's prices with 1980's tractor but that means 40 year old (undersize) top link.

I know it isn't top link, but when I worked for a Velcourt farm 35 years ago, they had a TW30 and dowdeswell plough behind and all the linkage was a replacement, as they said the original linkage just was not strong enough.
