Towing stuff about in tandem

Aye-up,

Just had a chap I know asking me a question, not sure on the answer….

He has a tractor powered wood chipper and wants to pull a trailer behind it on the road, just an empty trailer. Is that legal? If not, would it be legal if he put the trailer first with the chipper behind?

If legal at all, what are the implications with brakes?

Can he do that on red diesel? He is 100% forestry and agricultural work.

Cheers, Pete.

Can the chipper be 3 point linkage mounted?

where i used to manage, we had Fastrac& Chafer trailed sprayer which towed a diddy little chemical trailer with overrun brakes. After much deliberation our legal bods decided is was legal and we could carry on

It's a funny thing these UK laws. Much of the machinery on the continent appears to be purpose built for lots of things, including an appropriate hitch/coupling point and provision for lights and brakes. That being the case, and provided the manufacturer has designed it properly and certified it/homologated it etc etc, then why in the world shouldn't it be legal to use as intended?

I mean, if something is legal in Germany, what is to stop it being legally used in the same fashion in the UK except in terms of weak roads/bridges? It makes no sense to me to have such peculiar and varied laws which clearly impinge on our competitiveness compared to other European countries.

German road regs re ag trailed kit is at way different to uk rules. Even when we were part of EU we ignored their rules
