Toyota Hilux diff question

Looking at a used Toyota Hilux 2014 model 3.0 invincible auto .Now my question is do these have a diff lock?

And if not how do they perform off road with a sheep trailer on the back.

My 2011 is a manual, so guessing different. But it has a button to engage the div. however, the electric motor died and was going to cost a fortune, so didn’t bother. I think you can get them to perform off road better with some weight in the back and suitable tyres. But again, mines not a auto.

if its an invincible it will have an LSD on the rear diff, only the 2.5L engines had a rear diff lock unless specified on an HL2 or HL3 spec , i have never found i needed one on my 3.0L invincible though as there is no differential in the transfer box so when offroad it drives as a landrover would when in diff lock!

My 2013 Invincible auto doesnt have any manual diff lock buttons or levers.
The old 2004 Ranger is better for grip and pulling the trailer in muddy yards. To be fair it has better tyres though so maybe thats the odds.

Yesterday I towed my 12ft Ifor flat with sides on about 15miles with a bale of plastic to be recycled weight about 150kg, came back with a big recycling bin about same size and weight, stopped and picked up a pallet of fence posts, 6 strainers and 6 stays and pulled that the last 3 miles home

Averaged 15mpg over the trip, Was down to 8.8mpg on the screen on a long uphill pull doing about 40mph. :cry::cry::cry:
Ive seen it down to 5mpg on with 14ft stock trailer on, with 30 odd sheep on the bottom. Thankfully you can change the screen to temp and marvel how cold outside it is.
Mates Scania V8 isnt much worse and hes 44ton.
Not sure if its the auto or the engine but its a greedy bugger, nice truck but thirsty.

My 2013 Hilux 3.0 invincible manual does 20-24mpg religiously with no towing it's an absolute dog. Ive checked it every time since I've got it, I got 27mpg once in 5 1/2 years. I remember ringing the dealer about it he said engine needs time to bed in. Rang about it a few times there answer......you just got a tight engine.
@trook135 are you sure it has an LSD mine one wheels all the time.

Will, you can’t really beat a Mitsubishi off road. Why don’t you down grade the family car and buy the wife a new Volvo XC90.... or the L200 auto has locking rear diff and is very good off road.

I bought one of those new and you could add it as an option, it had an LSD but I always find them pretty crap. They have an extra button in front of the gear stick if it has it.

Then new invincible X has it as standard. I have used them both off road and found the old one brilliant (with AT or Mud tyres) and the new one would get stuck in a flat dry field (standard tyres). I just got rid of my 2016 Invincible X and would not get any new pickup with road tyres. Crap on road and off.

So really its 90% tyres that make the difference.

All of the pickups are better off road than the equivalent defender due to the locked up ctr diff. if you get one with a rear diff lock and good tyres your on to a winner!

yes, the LSD is a bit pants in them, Most lsd's are just that. They only limit wheel slip. Having blown mine apart before, I can tell you it is definitely an LSD, the easy way to tell (at least, when new) was the rear of the diff housing had a white sticker on saying LSD to ensure the techs put the correct oil in the diff, handily roughtrax have some pictures to show this

All Mk7's have LSD on the 3 litre (Man and Auto) - the button on Auto, in front of gear shift, is the shift lock button to hold it in that gear, nowt to do with the rear diff
