Tractor and Plough Insurance

just been sorting out my annual Insurance and getting cover for another year,

just out of interest, what cover do you all have for Tractor and also plough, and who with

Truck and 1 tractor +plough is with NFU

5 other tractors all with guaranteed values and first option buybacks with footman James

Above down to 1 tractor that is not 25 years old so NFU will only do it as a farm tractor and the cost of that 1 is more than the others put together.

I am with walker midgely and as renewal was due I was shopping around, and was thinking about going back to the NFU,
something I found out with NFU is if you insure a tractor on a Vintage or Classic policy, even if the tractor is fully comp on insurance, it does not cover anything attached, ie a plough or trailer or any other Implement,
A vintage tractor policy for a tractor is just that from NFU,
they stated that to me yesterday, and the plough has to be on a separate policy in its own right,
If it is insured with NFU on a working tractor policy its covered as any Implement attached is covered, but the working tractor policy is many more £££ to do it that way, yet a working tractor policy covers social domestic and pleasure, so can still be used for ploughing matches and covers the Implement on the back,
also the very strange thing thing the lady stated about the lorry side of things was as follows,
the classic lorry policy covers the lorry for social domestic and pleasure along with private use,
cover if comp is for the lorry in the event of an accident for full repair or written off an agreed payment would be made, BUT BUT no cover is for any load carried on the lorry, NO goods in transit and the likes of the tractor and plough are not covered by the lorry insurance in the event of an accident while being carried on the lorry,
NOW here is the bad bit, the tractor and plough on the lorry are not covered by their own policy as they are moving and not under their own steam as it were, and not being towed by a drawbar or chain, as in a engine problem or stuck in a field and need towed out, But are loaded and fastened down on a lorry,
so goods in transit insurance would be needed to cover tractor and plough when they are loaded to and from matches,, I said when did this come about, she said its always been like that, and she said "you are wanting a quote for a lorry, the price goes on the value of the lorry, not the value of lorry and goods carried," a Classic lorry policy is for older lorries going to shows etc not work," so the policy does not cover the load, as a classic lorry policy is not meant to carry a load and not insured for that purpose, and the tractor and plough are not covered by their own policy due to being transported by another vehicle, (even if owned by yourself) and its that vehicle the prime mover insurance or goods in transport insurance responsibility,
I thought she must of been mixed up on this, and said can you find out if this is truly correct, she said she would check and get back to me, half hour later she called back to comfirm what she said was correct and had come from head office and underwriters of the policy,

needless to say I went back to WM and asked the same questions to them, and they confirmed the policy I had for renewal with them covered all of the above that NFU did not, plus WM was a far better cover all in all, so the little bit money it was is far better, and doing a lot of miles a year need it to be right, in the claim culture of today
I will go on to say I have several tractors and several poughs Insured over the years anyway, and was not relying on tractor insurance to cover the plough anyway

so the question is how many out there with the NFU know this, and what experience have you had on a claim, or if something was to happen

NFU cover my tractor and plough, specifically detailed on the cover by model and value, it is also very clear that it covers ploughing matches. I think only the NFU do this. Its a good point about when its on the back of the lorry. My lorry insurance is for private use, but I made it very clear that it is for the transportation of vintage tractors to ploughing matches. I'll certainly check about the carriage element...

NFU here although have a blanket policy for all farm tractors etc, all ploughing tractors are on separate vintage policies, agreed value. I did ask about ploughs and am sure they are covered but will actually check. Lorry was on agreed value vintage but noted for carting tractors/ploughs to matches. Interesting I will check it out with my bod, although not using the lorry of late.

When this outfit was stolen it was loaded on the trailer that was stolen with it, all stored under my locked barn,
all were insured with the NFU, thye trailer was paid out on the specific trailer policy, the tractor on the vintage/classic policy and the plough was covered by the implement policy on my farm tractors insurance, had i not got any farm tractors the plough would not have been paid out on

Hi folks been peering from behind the curtains now and again, but today I decided to venture out from behind them to join and making myself known as I’ve nothing to hide, some of you I probably know already some of you are more obvious and others, if you wish to make yourself known to me then feel free to pm me if you so wish.

Okay I thought this thread is a good idea of John aka @Pennine Ploughing as maybe we could all benefit perhaps. I started out with show tractors insured through NFU and then switched all them to fully comp to Footman James where they still insured despite a few issues which I’ll share late pr but not for the want of trying to shift insurer but I can’t even get a block policy of NFU third party fire and theft for less than it currently costs me for fully comp, NFU we’re giving all the details as I’d rather deal local but they can’t get anywhere close on lesser cover never mind fully comp and that includes my annual discount as I have keep one tractor insured with NFU which turned out to be a blessing as I dropped my lorry insurance by close to 70% at the time I switched that from Footman James just goes to show it’s all just swings and roundabouts.

The reason I wanted to move from Footman James stemmed from when Towergate took them over (they own a lot of these vintage insurance specialists now including Walker Midgely and tend to share very common policies possibly, anyhow I had always got full insurance certificates for all my tractors including tractors I that wasn’t registered for the road, one renewal they stopped doing that and will only send temp cover notes for the tractors not road registered telling me they where still covered under the schedule, next renewal they refused to cover tractors that aren’t road registered after an argument on the phone they eventually agreed to continue cover on existing tractors that’s they’ve insured for years that still aren’t road registered but I can’t add anymore like that to get insurance for them I’d need to register them for road use and display the plates whether I wanted to or not.

My thoughts are you’ll never insure against all eventualities and the more you do the costlier it becomes, but I can understand the reasons why it’s good policy to do so but everything has limitations, as from past experience everything is fine when commision is involved to then it’s a grey area till something happens then it’s no longer grey at all.

John I was very interested in what you wrote about Walker Midgely, as a possible option to switch but first think I noticed was they Towergate too and it the underwriters that make the big difference but sadly it’s the same as Footman James too which surprised me given what you were told from WM when you sought verification, but I’ve read parts admittedly just parts on their website for their “Vintage Tractor” speciality scheme clicking through allowed me to read the policy documents and whatever that is doesn‘t sound at all like what been clarified to you so I’m hoping that isn’t the same policy you have, maybe as yours with it been taken out some time ago has different benefits from what‘s available now.
