I'm thinking of getting some flotation tyres for the rear of my tractor to reduce the mess i make when its wet, obviously they need to be as close in circumference as possible to the existing tyres to work properly with the 4wd. is there a recognised size to match an 18.4r38 for example and how leeway is there? cheers

If you want to float, but not tear about at 50k all day then russian radials, 28.1 x 26 is a closeish match for 18.4 38, metric equivalent width is 720, cheap enough. I sold a set on here a while back to @YELROM , I think there has been another set advertised since too.

You could put 600/65R38's on as a direct replacement.

Although perhaps not true flotations, the difference in travelling on wet ground and compaction is quite dramatic, plus you can leave them on all year round as they will not restrict transport width like genuine flotations would.

I've a pair of the russians, to fit Ford and early NH, not bolt in centres.

I bought a set of old goodyear 30.5lr32 tyres and surprisingly I found that they are almost directly interchangable with the existing 520/70r38 bkt's. I swapped fronttyres for ones that where a bit less worn and all is fine now. Horrendous ride on the road though, I hope that can be cured a bit by shaving them, getting rid of the unevenly worn patches.

18.4r38 is about 1.75m tall.
28L26 is only about 1.6m, so i would not recommend swapping for them if you want to use 4wd. Usually i think you should aim for 0-5% faster speed on front tyres. So you need to know ratio on front-to-rear on your tractor to be sure. I think its usually in the manual.

The "true" terra size to fit on 18.4R38 is 66x43-25. Goodyear, firestone and dneproshina make them, probably also others but i don't know of them. That tyre is about 1.7-1.8m tall depending on make and model and 105cm wide.

30.5LR32 is about 1.85m tall, and equivalent to 20.8R38 - for that height there is also 73x44-32 which is about the same height but almost 110cm wide, compared to 80 cm for the 30.5LR32.

Proper 800/900s would be a better buy, a much bigger investment but sure they'll last an age and can't see tyres coming down in price so won't depreciate much. Just get rims with bolted centres and they'll be very saleable if you change situation.

Are you sure a 43-66-25 is equivalent to an 18.4r38. I could be wrong but I
Think it's nearer a 16.9r38. There really isn't much that's a straight swop for an 18.4r38 unless your prepared to change fronts. A 650/60r38 if you could find an old set of trelleborgs or saw a set of I think 710/??r34's but again both v rare
