Very nice! what sort of output could you get out of that setup?
Average daily output was pretty dismal, we were always fixing the bloody thing!!

Depends how you treat them. We bought our old 1350 off a contractor who had similar experience to you but I very rarely have too much trouble because we chop grass not stones and old iron stakes and sheep troughs like contractors have to deal with. I wear blades out rather than smashing them but we only do our ownWe've had the most of them from kidd and newholland double chops to mengele, pottinger, taarup and finally jf precision chops. I think the people that look on trailed harvesters with fondness, never had to spend all night fixing at them or spend an hour unblocking the feed rollers and chute after taking in a lump. Moving over to a 2nd hand SPFH has meant less stress, less maintenance and far more output.

Maybe gear less and give it a chance could have been better for output
That was the problem with it in the end, we just had too much to get done with it in seemingly shortening weather windows
What could you lift per hour in between breakages?
What size SPFH did you go for if you don’t mind me asking ?We've had the most of them from kidd and newholland double chops to mengele, pottinger, taarup and finally jf precision chops. Place as I worked as a student - there were two tractor drivers, one was a foot to the floor, don't look back kind, and the other very steady and careful. The first ones schoolboy son used to help out with milking and calves and he was busily telling us how many more acres of silage his dad cut in an hour than Alan. Cowman then pointed out that his dad usually mowed for an hour or two then someone spent half a day fixing the mower, whereas Alan mowed for an hour, and another and another until it was all doneAverage daily output was pretty dismal, we were always fixing the bloody thing!!
Helped out on a farm that used a Viking 80 side mount, 90hp and a good operator, with 6t trailers trailing, it never seemed to break down, he'd have the mirror angled to watch the pick up, and followed the mower conditioner. Swapped the mower for a JF trailed with 3 drums? - it was absolute dog, yet others got on ok with them. Soon went for a late taarup 307 which they used for years with minimal botherWhenever I watch a video of a JF I'm always waiting for the bang and my left foot is always looking for a clutch!
Yeh, but you enjoyed it... apart from the chains!Average daily output was pretty dismal, we were always fixing the bloody thing!!
600hp. Less would do but its nice having it.What size SPFH did you go for if you don’t mind me asking ?
Ah sure no one says they’ve ever too much power600hp. Less would do but its nice having it.
Oh i’m sure the buckrake man might suggest it sometimesAh sure no one says they’ve ever too much power
Hit the nail on the head there, before we bought our latest machine, there was talk about getting a neighbour to do it with their SPFH and he even suggested he would slow down to save burying me at the pit, but that never happens as the trailer men get on a mission and forager just keeps filling them.Oh i’m sure the buckrake man might suggest it sometimes
How many acres a day would you do with a small box like this on short runs all less than 2mile View attachment 1157353
Yeah might aswell include that the newer ones just look like there designed to fall over on my hillsAre you including broken down time or working time?!
-The older type forage wagons weren't renowned for reliability.!
Might be ok in light multicut crops
