Exactly

Think rolling a grass field with 600 tyres on the tractor and a 10ft flat roller
In good going nothing marks and field is rolled

Then you come to a soft spot and the tractor sinks in 6 inches but the roller stays on the surface as its spreading its weight over 3m

The holaras silage roller weighs in at 3.5t over 3m but the ribs that are doing the compacting take up only 150 mm. compared to a 8-9t tractor on 650s with 3.5t on each back tyre.

i still maintain its better to carry the weight than let the weight spread out
think sprayer tractor on 300mm row crops or 900 wide floatys

As I've said before and to others, I was just as sceptical as the rest, until I used one. The comparison between a 434s with a 6930 rolling and the 434s with a 6930 with a silo-pactor on the back was unbelievable, everywhere we went with it didn't want to go without it again it made so much difference

in the context of working on soft grass silage pit the 300 tyres will sink a lot further than the 900,hence in my opinion doing a better job at rolling

I would have agreed with you for many years till i saw a pit rolled with a tracked machine.
Your theory would suggest that the weight is spread over a larger footprint and will do less, but the reality is the tracks put it down and there's no spring back up again.
I was surprised how well it worked.

Doesn’t the vibration of the tracks do most of the work?
