Trainee Shepherd

I have 2 border collies and am a qualified dog trainer with a passion for canine behaviour and nutrition, however I have never trained in herding. My children are all grown up and left home which now allows me the opportunity to do what I am passionate about. Anyone have any suggestions how I can get into work as a Trainee Shepherdess. I am able to relocate anywhere in Uk.

Cant think of anything better. Have messaged Pembrokeshire Sheepdogs. Thank you for your advice. I need to start somewhere as this is all new to me but would love a job as a shepherd. My passion is training dogs, Collies in particular as they are a completely different breed! and I prefer to train dogs than training people to train dogs. Dogs are far more intelligent!

Hello, did you ever hear back? I’m trying to find contact details for Anna-Lou about doing some sheepdog training with her.
Thanks!

There's a lot more to being a shepherd than posting with dogs. Quite a few people over the years have come unstuck due to this.

If you want to train dogs, get a couple of books and DVDs. Then rent a field and put 8 light sheep in it.

You've got to give it a go, before you know if it's for you or not... fair play to someone wanting to come and learn.

You're not from ag yourself, IIRC, but you've gotten in and stuck. I'm guessing you met plenty who told you not to, or that you'll find it's not what you think it is?...

Absolutely, but as @SteveHants says, the dog is a tool in managing the sheep.

But I’m maybe jaded from my own abortive experience of a trainee shepherd who was made keen on training dogs. She wasn’t interested in anything else, to the detriment of my business.

It's one thing training dogs but you need to understand sheep as well. Just because you can train a dog it doesn't necessarily go hand in hand with shepherding .
