Looking at a big trip to NZ. Going to be having one eye on moving there. Is there any way to have inland revenue accept some of expense as a business research trip?
Do we just have to call it holiday?
Can book farm viewings with estate agents etc. I'll probably see a lot of old Ford tractors while I'm there anyway.

Go for it. Let them prove you wrong. Maybe just claim your expenses rather than the whole family. I had an accountant once say - there's the white, the black and the big gray area in between.

I've family and friends in NZ, unless you are already familiar with the current state of things there, you may find the price of property etc. far greater than you expect. That written, there is great potential in many sectors, although some are entirely 'over run', to quote people there, by Chinese investors.

This needn't be a bad thing per se., but there are strong suspicions that the 'investment' is a long term strategy with the CCP behind it, rather than the individual 'entrepreneurs' as at first appears to be the case.

One relative has recently put a lot of cash into plastics manufacture, of a fairly 'green' type of course... He has kept his ag interests, but reckons that their is more potential for tertiary industry in the foreseeable future. Haven't had a chat since last month but then he was estimating that, from a start in the middle of last year, he'll recoup all within another eighteen months - which is pretty good going.

I think you maybe shocked at the price of ag land now in NZ. You may have missed that boat.

It appears the cheaper land is being planted with trees to tick the green box.

.......but have a great time.

A friend treated himself to 50 acres North of Aukland for his 50th Birthday.
It has permission for five dwellings, a shipping container and water.
He admits he will never build on it as this would be too much time & effort but he does spend three months each year there.
He bought before the rule that stops non Kiwis from buying land investments.
