Tree / Hedge shears - anyone hire them out?

I think you can do coppicing until the end of March

By machine though? I've looked into it, and the legislation mentions hand work through March, but nothing about mechanical machinery like this. I'd be very vary of sitting on my digger all March shearing off hedges then getting a visit from some clipboard wielding type, and having to try and prove I wasn't breaking the law.

If you've got something that says using a tree shear on a hedge in March is legally watertight, then I'll be happy, I can get back in the cab and clear overgrown hedges for another month!

@Goweresque what kit do you use?

Have you seen the shears in action? Not sure if the idea of clearing the lot to then gap up is going to work or not..

Seen them in action? I've been operating one (not a TMK one, one with two claws, a far better design) for the last couple of weeks on and off, between trying to fit in everything else, in a mad rush to beat the end of Feb deadline for hedge work.

This is the sort of result:

And this is what it looks like(when it was all shiny this time last year, its a bit less orange now):

my hedges are not quite as mature as those but what a lovely job that does. Assume you have bought that one? what size machine, 7 - 8 ton?

if you cut those lower down, say a foot from the floor would it kill them, i cant think it would but would let new plants get a chance to get away?

Lastly, how much does your operator charge in the picture?! will make sure no hares about when he comes down.... :)

You could cut lower, it wouldn't kill the plant. You can cut hedge plants off at the floor and they regrow.

Thats my machine, its a 15 tonner, and I drive it myself. The grab came direct from the manufacturer in Finland (http://www.karhukoura.com). If you have a 8 tonne machine you should price up buying one of the smaller grabs, unless he's put his prices up recently you might be pleasantly surprised.
