I see that under the new BPS rules not only will we not be able to cut hedges until Sept, but trimming of trees is also outlawed during this period.

So does this mean that we cant trim the overhanging branches when the crop has been cut and before the field is cultivated? Instead we have to do it in the winter when its sodding wet on the fields...

The sooner we rid ourselves of the SFP and the associated hangers on the better our life will be.

I think that's already the case. I enquired of WAG whether I was OK to trim some overhanging branches in early April and they said no. I could appeal if I thought I had a valid reason, but it would take at least a month to be heard. I thought I'd leave it until this Autumn instead.

I only asked as we have 'a few' footpaths about with some busy body walkers that would like nothing more than to shop me for something to prove a point. Bless 'em.:)

@neilo thats the problem though you cant leave it till autumn. This time next year we will still not of been able trim the overhanging branches despite some fields being empty for nearly 6 weeks. Oh and we are starting to drill OSR in the next week so that rules those fields out unless i want to create a bloody mess in the winter (poaching/run off from areas!)

@Badshot i agree. All this for what!?

Steady on. I do hope you're not suggesting that growing a crop to produce food is more important than a branch or two?

I understood that under WAG GAEC topping and lopping is ok anytime of the year as long as you don't disturb nesting birds @neilo

In view of the tw*ts that I have locally, I thought it was worth a phone call to confirm. Unfortunately I didn't get the answer I wanted.:(

If it had been further from the dog walkers eyes, the limbs would have been removed by the end of March.;)

So glad to be out of Tir Gofal this year; okay it was handy money at one time but the rules and regs were prohibitive, especially if you really read the small print which banned pretty well all common sense farming operations in favour of calendar dates, silly do's and don'ts, and measurements of this that and everything. Entering Glastir was a total no no for me; just glad to be able to start proper farming again, looking after and caring for the land I know far better than any bureaucrat or government diktat will ever do.

Hedge cutting dates are for everyone, not just those taking the green shilling.;)
