Voltmeter connected going to the motor (right terminal) or the solenoid, left terminal?
We are trying to help you find out whats wrong, so be patient ...........
Also try tapping the side of the solenoid (steel part) sometimes they stick.

Connected to the motor terminal.
I'm very grateful :)

Yes I tried the tap yesterday

You need an end cap for the solenoid or a complete solenoid.
You will probably need to take the starter off.
But if you have voltage at the motor terminal and its not turning it might be wise to checkout the internals of the starter when its off?

yeah i thought so, my step-bro is trying to get me to replace the whole starter but they're ~£200 delivered
the starter seems to work ok turning the engine over as long as it's not cold, the batteries are charged and the wiring is up to scratch

But double check its the correct solenoid and you first need to check the motor, especially the brushes.
Take your time doing this or it will be scrap ..........

No, that should be fine, I know mechanics that wouldn't take the back of a starter motor, so give yourself plenty of time to do it. If there is plenty left on the brushes the springs will be tight, just clean the part the brushes run, on the shaft with fine emery paper.
If you want to be cheeky, you could put the motor in a vice and power it up?
Don't make the last connection near the battery or on a valuable eye connection as you will get sparks and a bit of heat. But if it spins and you like a gamble, just go for the solenoid. You know best ..........

Visual inspection on the gear (bendix) for burs? Also keep in mind that it mates with the same teeth on the engine all the time as it engages, so you might have burs there too. But they don't usually cause any hassle.

Took a punt on a different solenoid based on the appearance rather than the compatible model (this is listed for CASE tractors) and it fits!
Will reinstall motor to engine later and give it a whirl

Hope someone is around at the moment.
Got the motor refitted. Only problem is the solenoid is rotated slightly differently from the old one. Now not sure which connection goes to motor. One (large) connection has a tiny link to another little metal bit on starter and one doesn't. I'm sure it's the one that does that goes to the starter. But that makes it the top connection (instead of bottom on old solenoid )
