got a very fine nail in middle of car tyre , i have always used mushroom type patches in the past but sometimes you need to drill the hole big enough to take the stalk , when i had one done when away from home the tyre pace just stuck a patch over the small hole , anyone know if its the same patches (using vulcanising solution) you get for tubed tyres , i have the grinding tool to make inside smooth to take patch .

I don't think they are the same, as when you patch a tube the tyre supports the patch, I’m sure tubeless patches are thicker. As you say I would normally drill the hole out and use a mushroom.

Tubeless patches are supposed to be aligned with the tyre chord bias, like a gator patch. They're also much thicker and less flexible than a tube patch.

Best practice is a mushroom, unless it's a slit too big to be reamed out round, then you need a gator patch to stop the slip tearing open further.

Mushroom patch is the only diy effort you will get away with. Use cement (blue) and not vulc solution. Tube patches are supported by the tyre and a tub,ess patch doesn’t have that benefit. You’ll find they are hot vulcanising jobbies most of the time and a bit more technical. Get the right size pilot drill to match your bung.

What about repair one that’s had a fencing staple? Local garage wouldn’t do it as the two holes to close together. Shame really as it’s a very good, barely used tyre as usuall!!

I put string repairs in my van tyres on the odd occasion I get a puncture.

Local tyre fitter was horrified, said it was a bad idea, it probably is but I've never had one leak or fail.
have tried this in the past , but didnt last more than 12 months on each occasion , nothing serious but slow leak from string , i feel happy with the mushroom patches knowing there is something behind holding the new cord in place .
