Now am running two dairy herds but whilst connected holdings and use the same machinery.
Would/Do you keep chemical/feed/ai/vet costs separate? and if so on the same accounts program?

What accounts package are you using, most will allow the set up for different cost centres so you can track each enterprise.

I have: Arable/Livestock/Rentals/Caravans/Share farms set up in ours so I can track each for profitability. Easy with direct invoices, less so for shared costs. But you could set up a "Central" cost centre for such costs and split that over the operating cost centres in a proportion appropriate to the running of each.

Quickbooks, can put in different account , customer/job and even class. How complicated do you need to make it?
Maybe will change accounts package next financial year to xero? But i have paid for q/b but will be monthly cost with xero or new q/bs. Another cost to bear?

Yes, Im on Xero.

One chart of accounts and a list of cost centres.

Very easy to use and set up, not complicated and does not really take any longer to input invoices other than ones with multiple lines that need splitting such as Mole Valley ones.

The reporting is in built so a P&L by cost center is easy.

i pay nothing at the moment as package is paid for with no support. to pay ££ a month would pain me unless it brings something to my business

I would possibly run proper accounts as one, and run fag packet calculations between the two on something specific when i was curious which would be often.

I think it brings management insight that helps inform decisions, often supporting a gut feel but you get it in black and white.

I would have a word with your accountant as well as no point using a package they arnt familiar with though Xero is the market leader now in the UK.

they gave me the speel on xero, which i probably paid for and had a free trial, but it wasn't the best time as i was busy tbh. maybe i'll give it another go when i have more time when i retire!

Our accountant recommends either sum it or farmplan

Although they heavily promote the online version, you can still get desktop Quickbooks, if you don't want to go to the cloud & never ending monthly payments.;) I upgraded a few months ago, when Intuit had one of their regular '80% off' upgrade deals. Cost me about £70 IIRC.

On the OP, I'd keep seperated accounts, for the reasons posted above.
