Hell of alot of halal and shechita meat must be being eaten by non believers when you consider jews and muslims only account for about 6% of our population.

Most Halal is stunned - that’s a message that needs to be understood by all of us. By all means criticise non-stun, but please don’t criticise all Halal as it does nothing but alienate a major customer group.
Agree, but 25% of sheep still non stun.
That's not good. Possibly a large proportion of that may be ewes? Either way not how I would want my sheep slaughtered.

Have you witnessed non stun sheep slaughter first hand? Not the emotive videos they stick on YouTube, but the real deal? I have, and saw no animal stress whatsoever - certainly less than a typical gathering for vaccination, weaning if lambs etc.

IF you can guarantee it is always carried out effectively and with compassion.... and I doubt you can.
Cut a sheep's throat ear to ear and snap its neck back, and I think it is fine.
But to be able to get footage of sheep being carelessly slashed and left to jump over their mates on a conveyor system, it must be happening.

I've seen it and done it myself abroad. I've no problems with non stun slaughter of sheep, when done correctly!

Cattle are s different matter however.

That can happen in a recoverable stun system too, so maybe best you become vegan and don’t keep any animals if that disturbs you.

Not in a commercial slaughterhouse situation, no.
I'm happy to be educated. I understand studies have shown that pre stun renders the animal effectively brain dead pretty instantaneously. (Forgive me if my terminology is not 100%)
Is there similar scientific evidence for non stun methods?

Not brain dead so much as unconscious, for stunned killing, as the stun is often designated as “recoverable”. For the non stun I witnessed, the first action was to swiftly remove the head from the body - not recoverable, but certainly instant brain death. The sheep will have suffered much more in the preceding half hour or so in the collecting pens/ transport/ whatever (for which the killing method is irrelevant) than it will at the point of death.

25% non stun is simply unacceptable. I know it can be done humanely, I have seen it done myself, but what a terrible image to for Joe public. It needs to be banned ASAP

I don’t think the country’s producers can afford to lose 25% of the demand. Certainly not on top of the potential disruption to EU trade from a messy Brexit.

Joe Public should be given the same as you and I have - that it makes no difference and the emotive nonsense portrayed by PETA et al is just that.

No it doesn't. Joe public need to be educated.
Yeah good luck with that. With all the vegan nonsense going on at the moment, having sheep killed by having their throat cut and neck broken as opposed to being stunned first just for the sake of a small percentage of our population's religious views , gives more ammo to the antis.
It needs to be banned. IMHO.

It’s not a small percentage though, is it? Probably more Jewish and Muslim than Vegan and Vegetarian.

Ask yourself - who is your customer?

I know it makes no difference to the animal, so why should I pander to emotive lies from someone who isn’t a customer, to the detriment of my relationship with a customer?
