Umbillical hose

I have run different types of rubber and pu over the years but find snaptite to last the best. Running all snaptite now. Even though it is thinner in the wall than it was 25 years ago!

Hello All

I'm Mick from Designation Ltd who are the official UK and Ireland agents for Oroflex hose. It's quite interesting for me to hear all these comments as I normally only get to hear things from our agents.

Hands up! The green Oroflex 30 was not our best work, we replaced all that we knew about.

Feedback from the end user is vital to us, so let me know any thoughts you may have on Oroflex hose. If we can change things, we will. Thanks for listening

Have you no w got a replacement polyurethane pipe instead of the green one.?

Good morning,

Yes, we basically started from scratch on this. Our target was simple enough, 17 bar working pressure [50 bar jacket], as flexible as we could make it and also to sit as 'flat' as we could on reelers. The higher pressure rating is down to the Doda HD35 knocking out higher pressures than published data. We have recorded pressure spikes from the HD35 at up to 19 bars!

So, our new Oroflex 30 is blue but just to confuse everyone, 5" and 6" are green. Reason? North America likes green in those sizes but UK prefers blue, it seems. Either way, all is to the new standard. We also changed the PU material to a higher grade Elastollan to better resist cutting and abrasion. So far, so good with about 15,000 metres in the marketplace. More than happy to pop samples over to anyone who's curious!

I have a lot of time for Snaptite, credit where it's due. Maybe it's a little different to what it used to be but in our early days, Snaptite and Angus were the boys to look up to. I'd like to think we are matching them now in all areas but I've always respected those two competitors.

What does the 3 year warranty cover on oroflex pipe as advertised by the self voted uk no 1 umbillical supplier[emoji16].btw theres other pumps able to put up equal or more preassure than a doda hd.

Warranty is, and always has been, a mysterious subject. What's included and what's not etc.

For our part, we guarantee Oroflex hoses free from manufacturing defect for life. Our reasoning is fairly simple, a stockist may have the hose on his shelf for a year or two before he sells it. So when does the clock start ticking? To remove doubt [and in fairness, it doesn't matter to us how long it's been stored as long as it's stored correctly], we can normally tell if an issue is down to us or mis-use. If a problem is reported in the first few weeks of use, then our instant thoughts are that it might be our problem. If it's a year or two down the line it is more likely to have got biffed somehow. But...there's no real way of telling unless we see it. Occasionally, the source of the problem simply can't be determined. There's no exact science to all this but there are a few tell tales that we look for that give us a clue to what may have happened.

If you offer a warranty it has to mean something, and the only way we can do this is by backing up what we sell. If we're in the wrong, there's little point in arguing. If the hose is full of barbed wire, nails, stones etc. then the operator knows how that occurred and so do we.

Thankfully, claim incidences for us are dropping all the time [We use a percentage of lengths sold] and the better we make it, the closer we get to our targets. It does put pressure on us because there are some cheaper hoses out there and we have to be competitive. But should we drop the specifications to meet the lower cost manufacturers? Well, here's the news...we won't do it. It does mean our market share will fall for a bit but in the long run we hope to get it back.

Point taken on the pumps, I only mentioned that one make because it's a fairly popular one.

Ha! If I can fit 200 metres into a Jiffy bag...it's yours!

As you may be aware most of our sales into the slurry/sludge and irrigation market are via agents. As a rule of thumb, I'd say Oroflex 30 is 10% higher than Oroflex 20. That difference is down to the raw material cost and shipping. For example, we can ship 600 metres of 4" Oroflex 20 on one pallet space but only 400 metres of Oroflex 30.

I really think [Totally biased comment coming up] our Oroflex 30 is a super hose but Oroflex 20 is technically better. I'd bore everyone if I explained further!!

We use Oroflex 20 and Bauer fittings. Is there any kit available to repair small holes in the pipe from snips etc rather than cutting a bit of the same pipe and pushing it down the pipe to cover/sleeve the hole? Would be nice if there was a repair kit?

Also what's the best way of pulling the pipe over the fitting? Is there some special technique? Tried fairy liquid to help slide but you get it's on a bit and can never get it over the third ridge of the Bauer fitting. Complete nightmare.

Many years ago we tried a product from Belzona. It is used to repair conveyor belts. It's a two part resin and we added a section of knitted yarn [Same as the reinforcement in an Oroflex]. Well, the result was not the prettiest but seemed effective. We tested to 60 bars without failure.

Here's the 'buts'. Our test was in a clean room, how well will it fare being dragged? Not sure. It 'aint cheap and once opened, you have to use it fairly quickly. However, we did this over 10 years ago, maybe they have a better/cheaper product available now. I think they are based in Sunderland or Middlesbrough...

Coupling fitting. We've tried everything too. When new, the best method we find is cut absolutely square and then use Vaseline [not grease or Fairy] and tap against a hard surface. In house, we can fit couplings in less than 20 seconds. When the hose is used, bit of a different story I'm afraid. The hose will become slightly softer and doesn't respond to the 'tap' process nearly as well. The hose bore will become slightly smaller too. But do try Vaseline. Are you using genuine Bauers?

To help, we have gradually increased the bore diameter to an average 104/105mm or 130/132mm on 5". But remember, consider each hose as hand made so all are slightly different on bore diameters.

In all honesty, we fit maybe 200 or more sets of Bauers monthly with just the odd bugger playing up. Brand new hose, nice warm factory, it's easy. In a barn on a cold night with used hose, cannot be the same but we don't have much experience of that. We did look at hose expanders once but Vaseline became our answer. Heating will make no difference. cutting slits and pulling with rope, not really. One idea someone had here was silicone as that's super slippy but we've tried it.

The best way I've found of fitting them is to start hose by hand obviously then place a 1foot piece of 3" by 5" up against the coupling face.... Stand with one foot on the coupling tail and leather the wood with a sledgehammer. Works a treat. Maybe a bit rough thou[emoji23]

As the above correspondent said, Bauer do stamp the lever ring handle and yes, when closed the lever sits almost in line with the hose. This does help stop the handle from being snagged, although not infallible!

We have seen 'non-Bauer' male and female tails being used with a genuine Bauer Lever ring, though.

I found a 'jiffy' bag for you to send a 200m sample (y);)

Slightly off topic but been thinking of getting some 5 inch pipe, does it fit through spreadwise ramps? And is it harder to blow out, especially in thick slurry?

On the first question, I can't see why not as most hoses are dimensionally quite similar [although I spotted one at LAMMA last week that was a bit bizarre]. I can always send a sample to offer up.

The second question I cannot answer not being a contractor. Perhaps someone else in here has a handle on that?

regarding you ramps you need to measure clearance for 5" pipe you will need close to 6" clearance. As for blowing out it takes a little longer "more volume to fill" as for thicker slurry I think it will blow out easier than 4". Performance wise you won't be disappointed with 5" pipe. We have two compressors to blow out and send a sponge every time.
