Un-attended cow crossing .. for Robot system

I was involved with the construction of the underpass at Staffs Showground under the main road to the car parks. It would be of a size OK for cows but not vehicles. Admitted there were long ramps installed to make it easy to walk, but iirc the estimate started at about £110K and ended up at nearer £200K !

Are you going to running a ABC grazing system or will it be set stocked?
How much extra grazing will it give you 20,30,50%?
Why not buffer feed either as fresh grass or silage that block.(presuming your not organic)

We are hedgemonkeys so will be going for abc set -up.. at various points of the year the shed may well be one or two of the grazing areas.. I do that now (not right now obviously!)with night and day grazing with a bit of grub in the shed.. hay, silage fresh grass..

@Foregoneconclusion how about a really wacky idea, make your robot portable and take it to the field

:cool:...:LOL::LOL:

Um..... best not.. my daughters and wife would not be impressed!

I know a guy with a red robots making his cows walk a fair distance and up and down but he has no water in paddocks

My cows will walk 500 metres or more early mid lact if you've got the grazing right and theres an incentive for them to come back to the shed .. such as the prospect of tasty silage or fresh grass.. i position my troughs about half way between the bots and the fld... In late lactation the only thing that brings them in is rain.. flies.. or that they have really run out of grass..

I think this is a great idea, and one that should be supported.

It would cost more than 45k to design an underpass, never mind build it.

There are many rural locations where this type of crossing would be a massive benefit.

Get some support from interested parties, get the highways agency to consider an 'experimental ' project.

Put together a very strong benefit to your business, the local community and farming in general.

This will need ' high level ' lobbying, so get a very credible land agent/chartered surveyor on your team.

There’s only one way I can see this ever getting widely supported....

Delete the word COW.

Add the words GREAT CRESTED NEWT, BADGER, etc.

Farming is ignored by most.

The environment, however, gets money thrown at it for mad experimental projects. Especially endangered species.

£4million to rehouse a newt?! But of course!!

I plan to involve the CLA, the Pembs coast national park and the NFU.. might have a chat with my AM and MP

I agree that if a precedent is set it will make a difference to others.. as the main hurdle for my highways guys is that there is no other like it in the uk..

I would not even entertain some kind of unattended crossing. Car drivers are all prunes these days, you will not make it intrinsically safe unless you put in vehicle barriers which can actually stop a car. Look at the grief and nonsense Railtrack have with divvies crossing level crossings. The first cow you have to have shot because some plonker has hit it will make you regret the whole job. I've seen muppet cyclists try to battle their way through a herd of cows before, your insurers are going to hate you.

Underpass or a bridge, it's the only way. Make sure the plan is wide enough in case 'they' widen the road one day.

Local road collapsed in middle due to badger set below.
Road closed and concrete 'bridge' built over it.
Not sure if badgers stayed to see completion.
