unhappy farmers

We don’t have many sheep but this lambing has been a chore I’ve sat in the shed many a night and just looked around and the amount of things I could see that needed money spent on them is unbelievable but unfortunately the pot is always empty . When I think we are keeping people alive with all our hard work I think we should get a better deal

Was putting a roof on for an ex big city banker, he was under the impression that all farmers made a good living and were relatively wealthy. When I explained the reality of livestock farming, especially tennant farmers he was quite shocked. He asked why we bothered doing it....

It's an addiction. I gather junkies hate heroin, but can't stop. That's why we're all on here on Friday night talking about our work.

institutionalised / fear of change / family / its our home as well as business , loads of reasons.
My trip into Cardiff to do the roof today reminded me why I do it, all be it on a small scale, I really couldn't live in a city or town again or even work for someone full time. I now have the freedom to do what I want, when I want and how I want.... Willing to give up alot of "luxuries" for that.

Yes on rare occasions i go back to Newcastle area where i came from it always reminds me whyi like been in the hills away from city life! I couldnt handle the traffic for one i see waiting in traffic jams as a waste of ones life !

My neighbour was a very savvie businessman and farmer, and he always used to ask me why I bothered when I bumped into him. At the time I was in my 30s/40s and was going to live forever. Now at 60+ with no offspring, it is hard to justify carrying on, so the next couple of years will see a gentle winding down to just our own little holding and our Dartie sheep. More vintage tractor tinkering and no more tagging/ringing suckler calves with angry mums Having made the tough decision, I find i can'r wait. :)

When I used to see a new tractor or a piece of kit I could of used I used to be quite envious but now all I can think is how the f*’k are they going to pay for that it’s that desperate
When I read this I looked to see what age you are, I'm a bit younger than you and I think exactly the same, In fact I'm glad I don't own it 🤣

Can you though..... are you going out checking/feeding animal every day because you want to or because you have to. Or going out in the evening to spray a couple of fields as the wind has finally dropped because you want to or because you have to?

I often want to those things because I have to to make the farming year successful. I think it's a very blurred line between "want to" and "have to" at times. Still wouldn't want to do any other job though 🤷‍♂️

Hopefully that makes sense, and I've got my point across, I'm not very articulate when it comes to putting my thoughts into words.

Yes I understand your point, many things have to be done even though you might not particularly want to do them at the time. My point was that I get to decide, it's my responsibility, I choose....I'm not beholden to the whims of others.

I don't think many appreciate the benefit of having hour by hour control of what we do, obviously that comes with responsibilities but no one forces us to continue, lots of well paid jobs for people with the skills and work ethic most farmers have
