It’s nearly pollen beetle time and to carry out much needed research scientists at Rothamsted are urgently calling upon the help of oilseed rape growers.

To preserve the activity of insecticides and reduce their environmental impact, it is important that insecticides are used only when necessary. To make it easier for growers to know when action thresholds have been reached, Rothamsted Research have developed a pollen beetle monitoring trap and have validated an on-line decision support tool which helps farmers identify the main risk periods of their crops. This research is funded by the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB).

Scientists at Rothamsted Research are urgently calling on oilseed rape growers from across the UK to run monitoring traps and perform transects in their crops – ideally 3 times a week from green bud stage to the start of flowering. All trapping materials and guidance will be provided.

The research is in special need of sites in Scotland, Wales, Cornwall/Devon, North-East and North-West. Sites in Ascot, Bury St Edmunds, Hereford, Kirkton, Newcastle, Preston, Starcross, Writtle, Wye & York are also required.

What's this initiative got to do with the price of seed?

Information such as this can help us all to use products more effectively and preserve the effectiveness of the ever decreasing armoury of products we have at our disposal. Sometimes it's good to give a little for the common good, it's not as if Rothamstead have a commercial interest in the products.
