Using all your home made solar for hot water

i know there is a device out there which uses up spare elec and directs it into the immersion.

It's that time of year when biomass can be shut down but need hot water and don't fancy the big bills of previous years Pre renewables.

Got 9kw of PV and 6 kw of hot water immersions wired directly back to fuse board for this reason.

What have others done?

I have 2 immersions in the accumulator tank (from 2 sets of 4KW "domestic" panel setups), On a good day the whole tank gets hot enough for all hot water needs without the boiler running.

it is important you use one of the many devices available to control the kw the immersion heater uses, it works by varying the voltage going to the heater element so that you never get a situation where you start drawing power off the grid, it will only use what is available from the solar,

Any links to available device?

Still looking into this.

The only risk is if there isn't much sun then will 500 litres get heated up with out using grid!? I know it's not viable but I'd ideally like to have a warning light come on warning me of 'wife temper approaching' if it was too cold for kids bath at 6pm so I could nip out and chuck a bale on!

just strap one of the tank stats to the side of the tank with a pre selected temperature, they have a set of change over contacts so you can use these contacts for any purpose.

I have my oil boiler timed to come on when hot water will be needed, it tops up the temp if the water from the accumulator tank is not warm enough due to cloudy day of lots or washing has been done during the day.

Similar here, from wind. My oil boiler will kick in (from time clock) to heat 250l thermal store for HW/CH if the 1000l buffer isn't hot enough. Buffer only heated by electric. Stat at top of buffer determines whether boiler is allowed to run.
