Using grindstone

tv farming programs show big tractors
and machines which I cannot relate to at all but last night our Yorkshire farm with the Owen family were using a hand turn grindstone which I can relate to as I have one but is now surplus to requirements
There is skill to using it to achieve good results like using small amount of water to make paste and prevent blade overheating
It was bought from a farm sale in the
Early 60's from the Chirbury/ Marton
area

In my youth, it was my job to turn the handle while my boss sharpened the knife to carve the Sunday joint. Then, at lunch, I would get the full history and pedigree of what we were eating!

I used to turn a grindstone for my father when I was a youngster. I've still got it, and another one. One I made into a base for the patio umbrella and the other is used as a staddle stone top.

I did wonder whether it was originally treadle powered with the linkage on the handle and counter weight.
