Just stripped an a 93 three of the discs each side are like new but the one against the brake activator is back to metal. Any ideas why they don't wear evenly

what type system is it? Is it an expander type or piston ?
Can only image if its an expander type brake system but doesn’t expand out evenly from the centre with same number of discs either side of the expander or piston then if pushing all from one end the first plate contacted is,first in line and bears the bulk of the applied force

You are correct it's expander type and a very poor one. The expander is one end of the four discs. The expander is in two completely separate halves no springs etc keeping it together. So could it just be bad design and not anything wrong with it?

Yes expander systems only really wear evenly if the discs are situated either side of the expander to balance the load across all the discs if you are applying the pressure from one end than the furthest away disc will always have less wear and likewise the first disc is first to apply.
