If I wanted to build up a Fergie plough to compete in this class, can I modify the boards, ie lengthen them and give them a little more twist and modify the frogs? Would this be allowed? Have a Ransomes in the shed but fancy a challenge and it interests me.

I think the original ethic in the Classic Class was ‘do what you want to the frame as long as you don’t alter the soil engaging parts’ This seems to have spilled over into the Vintage Mounted Class.
Like it or not, there are those who have made small subtle changes to their boards and shares without being rumbled.
Same old same old. Do whatever you want until you start to win - that’s when the problem starts and the knives come out.
Be careful making things longer as you might well end up in a saga similar to RND vs YL, where the longer board needs far more skill in use in order to beat the shorter board. The same applies to RWM’s.
Ever thought about getting some L base bodies which are not currently allowed in the Fergy Class?

I have seen some L base boards in the Fergie Class and believe they are pretty handy, much like a 183. I thought as much so may as well use the Ransomes then, although if i come across a set of L base boards I may have a dabble.

The purists don`t allow L boards as they are MF not Ferguson. Watch out for this because I think it is GP only.

Yes, I already know this, already in enough trouble with the Ferguson Police without using L base boards!! Was talking Vintage Mounted, although a plough with L base boards did win the National Fergie class going back a few years I gather. It seems you are frowned upon for even getting your plough true and square once you start doing semi well in the Fergie Class, they dont like it "up emm!!!"

Thats because the name is more important than the work standard.Trouble is caused by those who believe that everyone who finishes in front of them must be cheating.Soon, you will have to have the paint code checked before you can put the kit in the ground!

I always think L base bodies make a lovely job, but as stated the Fergie police don't allow them, despite some people swearing blind they were available in the Fergy era. Before the Fergie class existed I use to use a Fergie plough and tweaked and fetled it during the 90's, boards stayed std though. I did ok but as the pace picked up in the vintage class you just get out-classed. Now I use my Ransome I've put the Fergie plough back to std and I intend to have a go with it again at my local vintage match for a change from the blue! (maybe I'll go back to the blue straight away afterwards though!). I think the Fergie class is by far the best one make class, the others are a waste of time eg DB, IH, etc.. can't see the point of them. I think the best "mod" I've seen on a Fergy GP is when they're worn right down at the back, that bit of board not being there seems to have a very positive effect on the finished furrows, maybe get your angle grinder out!! Reality is, there is only really the boards/skimmers that make the difference, you could hack and slash and put YL's on, but what's the point. You could put KV skimmers on, but I think they're over-rated (I still use them though).

My Dad had a 3 furrow fergy plough he used on his 1956 35. It was 8 inch furrows but he spaced them out to 9 inch, made a lovely job just like the trailed oat furrow ploughs, (not good really for weathering though) What mould boards would they have been? they were far different to the 2 furrow gp`s.

Yes a 3 furrow Lea plough at 8" furrows, have one sat in the shed, did think to drop a furrow off and use that but best leave it be, they are very rare, managed to pick mine up of Ebay for not a lot as not sure anyone knew what it was, right place and right time.
Lol, I am not trying to do something to compete in the Fergie Class, I already do that with a couple of Fergie ploughs already, was just pondering modifying one for Vintage Mounted with a slower twist but I think I will just use my Ransomes. I have won a few Vintage Mounted matches with the Fergie but conditions need to be spot on, sandy soil with some moisture.
But having been drawn over the coals by the Ferguson Gestapo on a public forum for just basic plough set up (that I have been running since I started) extended rear disc stem, clipped wings on my points, welding new stem shafts in place of worn ones and re-bushing my disc carriers oh and fixed landslide I have become a bit pee'd off with it. The people are great and the competition is good and we have good banter but there are a bunch of old women who let it all down, it is almost like a Ferguson Cult, all I want to do is plough, no interest in Ferguson, although did think to paint mine Ransomes Blue!!
Anyway I digress, maybe just withdrawal symptoms and knowing I wont have a match to go to for 3 months!!!
I do have a set of very worn boards on one plough I have just built up, which I have only used 3 times, they go ok but really need to learn how to get the best from them, they dont suit a really long top link with the plough led into work like I normally do but I will get there with them eventually.

And how often do these "Old Women," trouble the prize card writers?

Geoff Midgely (God rest him) won with Lea bodies in Hampshire I think. Lots of guys said they were L Base. Lea bodies are - as far as I am aware, eligible for the Fergy class. LBase were Massey Ferguson, as are some of the furrow width adjusters seen on a lot of Fergy ploughs.
One make classes are what they are though. What you see is what you get. Enter them at your peril

Also, whilst waiting for your cup of vitriol to refill, you may like to spend the time looking to see how many times I have tried to change the rules to make myself more competitive. I would caution you however, the search will be long, and unrewarding.

I thank you gentlemen for your words of encouragement, but perhaps you would like to consider the fact that without the lesser,and/or fading lights, there would be no one to make the experts look good.

And perhaps you could consider the fact that you were the first to criticise, stones and glass houses spring to mind Harry

I see no criticism, merely an observation that these groups of rule fanatics in what ever sport or activity they inhabit, always surface when someone shows greater skill than them.
