I’ve had some or they look identical either from screwfix or ebay on 20mm pipe and tap fittings. They’ve been fine up to now! Some have actually been berried aswell but we’re on a booster pump setup here set at just over 3.5 bar

Keeping the pipe clean and scratch free is important ,tighten as hard as you can by hand .i always test before burying,if it weeps give it a tweak .remember you can buy pipe upto 2000m lengths ,so keep joints to a minimum,

Have you used the bigger stuff? 50 and 63 mm?

Used a shite load of the 50s and a handful of the 63s.

Use inserts

mark where it needs to go on the pipe so you know your all the way in

Plenty of vet lube

Changer the edge either with a proper tool or a Stanley blade

I tighten with a belt tightener but not stupidly tight and then pressure test. About 1 in 10 weap a little bit so just a quick tweak and your all sorted.

Also don’t buy The valves from these places guy in cardigan makes mine up something like £6 for a 32mm £10 for 50mm I think could be lieing but seriously cheaper than conventional ones

Are they pvc ball valves with a male threaded mdpe connector screwed into each side? Look smart, how are they if they freeze?

Basically yes he makes them up himself. Suspect not ideal on freezing as maybe more brittle but the price totally negates any concern.

Philmac are supposed to be as good if not better than Plasson nowadays.

If I ever have a leaky joints I can with confidence assure you it’s a Philmac. I hate them. They are frankly pathetic. Cheaper to chuck £20 notes on the floor than waste your time with them.

Modern Philmac?

I won’t touch the old black taper ones now. A STW guy told me about the new Philmac couplers, particularly with regard to black pipe as they don’t need different rings/inserts like Plasson.

Plasson every time here. Yes they’re expensive but water isn’t too cheap either.

I agree. They also have the best range of fittings to allow you to connect to all the grades of old black plastic water pipe, plus copper and steel, all of which is very useful on farms where existing aged water systems have to be maintained. I've tried the cheapo versions, and always come back to Plasson.
