Water pump advice

Can anyone help recommend me a water pump please?

We have two concrete reservoirs on the farm, one holds approx 9,000 litres and the other over 14,000 litres. The smaller and lower reservoir is fed by a natural spring delivering at minimum 9litres per minute and 40l/min at peak times. The two reservoirs are 500 metres apart and crucially with a head of approx 26m. There is 32mm plastic pipe between the two reservoirs.

We currently pump water using a Blake's Hydram. The hydraulic ram was first installed in 1908 and later replaced with a smaller model (when mains water arrived in the village) in the 1970s. It's been going regularly every year. Unfortunately in a dry time (like this year) there isn't enough water for the ram pump to work for long enough and we are constantly running out of water. It used to just be in extreme droughts but now happens more or less every summer.

I'm looking for a solution to pump water from the one reservoir to the other during the summer months when water supply is low. We need to pump 15,000litres a week or 2,000l per day to keep up with demand. There is no electricity so I would need to go with diesel, petrol or PTO. To clarify major limitations are 500m of 32mm pipe with 26m head. Is there something that can cope with this?

Our ram pum for your interest.

Hi,

We think we can solve this with the use of our Sureflow valve combined with our papa pump.

The Sureflow valve operates the pump automatically without fuel or electricity via a float and valve in the supply area.

If you could let us know your supply head and current size supply pipe we can take a look for you, please email us at: [email protected]

2 good suggestions above.

9 litres/minute is 540 litres/hour is 12,960 litres/hour - so you have plenty of water but the ram wastes too much.

IIRC the efficiency of a ram is 50% of fall/head so a fall of 8 meters to the ram should give you enough litres. However this will not guarantee you have enough water to run continously.

A PAPA pump should be more efficient and their Sureflow valve sounds a great idea.

Thanks for the kind words C.J :D
