I need to do something to collect rain water from buildings. Iwant to built a tank and use the water for crop spraying. Has anyone priced various options, eg mass croncrete, pre cast tanks or steel tank.
I want it to look well so dont suggest artic oil trailer please. I am thinking 50k lts to 100 k lts

We use IBC containers for polytunnel watering. Can safely stack 4 high and if you link the existing valves into a common manifold each layer can be emptied as a seperate unit. With the right overflow pipe each layer can be self filling from a single point. If using for crop spraying you need the first tank as a filter tank otherwise you will end up with blocked nozzles. Has to be clean for our polytunnel sprinkler system. You can source IBC containers off the bay for approx £30 for 1000 ltr containers just be aware of there previous use and whether you will be able to clean them out for your purpose.

Ask the likes of Yara Chafer about old metal liquid fertiliser tanks. A coat of Aquaseal around the inside will last for years. Do you guys in Ireland have liquid N?

that's what we have got ! ours is about 120,000 litres collected from our new shed the water is then pumped into the shed for the 80 or so stock inside. we have only had to use mains through the last 2 winters for about 10 days in total when the level got too low. In the summer the water is pumped out to the field troughs supplemented by borehole water. As long as you put the water into the tank clean you don't tend to get algae growing ontop though we do have a filter and a UV filter when we pump back out.

A neighbour reckons chlorinated water isn't right for stock, would you notice any difference though?

we have used a bit of hypo when some silage effluent got into the tank by mistake cows drank it ok not sure if it had any negative effects ? I would be more concerned about estrogen levels in mains water!

Here's one we did earlier.
I don't think it would be economic for us to go over to Ireland to do one though. Think the cost of the whole system was around £20,000 a couple of years ago. Can't remember the capacity of the tank, probably around 200 cubic metres.

As the cost of water rises, we are carrying out more rain harvesting work. We have installed a system where all rain from shed roofs is filtered and collected in a small underground tank, from where it is pumped to a large storage tank, for various uses.

The storage tank was constructed from old tower silo sheets, with the angles either made by us or re-rolled to the correct radius. The filler pipe is shown, with the A float valve inside to close it when the tank is full. The pump detects this and switches off, allowing the collection tank to overflow into the drainage system. A grain silo can be adapted to contain water, but will need strengthening due to almost double the pressure.
