Water troughs

Building a slatted shed and on the last lap now but just wondering where to put troughs and what type. Shed is 20 foot wide fully slatted. Was thinking about putting them onto rsj but would have to have gates with cut outs to sling over trough. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

it would depend what your sides are and what are inclosed ,i take it there will be a feed barrier along the front could you not put a concrete trough there or have a tipping trough built in to the barriers , will the pipes be a problem freezing up as they will not have much protection in a shed like that who's doing the build is it Kenney

Both sides are feed barriers which makes it abit more awkward.
is that building part of a larger project? if its only 20ft wide you will have more feed space available than the building can be stocked at or am i missing some thing , what type of barriers are you using? by the way looks a quality job

Wherever you decide, I would use concrete troughs. Build a small base 18inches ish high and sit a 40-50 gallon concrete trough on top. Site the at the back of the shed stealing between 2 pens and fabricate a post to bolt to the floor or new block work with a couple rails above the trough to keep the pens separated. Pin or swing your dividing gates to the post. Wouldn't go past concrete now, a bit more robust than steel or plastic.

The shed is 60x20 feeding out both sides. The future plan is to have the shed split into 6 pens, each holding 13/14 animals (7-12 months) depending on size. Barriers are just a single metal pole running along outside of RSJ with wooden boards between RSJ. Simple and possible to adjust heights for different ages by using different heights of boards, if that makes sense

i like the idea of no straw usage i know in your part of the world its expensive,I wonder if cattle do as well on slates as straw yards though

I would get comfort mats on those slats and your stock will thrive as well as on straw.Don't want to be critical but personally I would have gone for 12 foot slats to give slightly deeper pens.

Have similar type shed built here recently have put the water troughs in the center of the pen divides . Trough is a home made jobby. There 4ft long 1 ft wide 8 inches deep . With a bung underneath to empty them when they get dirty . Kind of a trial to see if they stay clean . So far it's every second day they get cleaned out .

We have 15 slatted pens and have these jfc troughs. Great job. Cheapest source is Fane Valleys online store. We have a cut out in the dividing gates using the Jourdain telescopic gates with the cut out sections. The flap on the trough stop them dunging in them. Before I had these in we were cleaning troughs twice daily. We feed round the outside of the shed so putting them on the outside wouldn't really work as they'd fill with silage. JFC now make a frame to mount them too.

Thanks for ideas every one. Water pipe was going into day so didnt post quite early enough. Got a double trough on out side of shed on each side and will put another 2 single troughs inside shed. Will post pics of finished shed. Possibly start another thread and show shed progression.
