Water well

Just reopened a linered well after 35 years . Dad never thought much of it after it was lined with 3 ft concrete rings . Probably about 15 ft deep. Lifted as much water out as possible about a foot left . Just to see how long it takes to refill. Seems to be inlet holes in the liner near the bottom.
How does this work. Is the outside filled with stone? Seems a solid bottom?

I reckon I lifted about 3-400 gallon out . Is the bottom just earth normally . Couldn’t reach last foot as the pipe was too short . It wouldn’t be hard to do that . Does it need cleaned right to the bottom?

If it’s concrete rings then it’s likely gravel in the bottom and around the outside. Unless it’s got a lot of soil in the bottom then the water pressure will likely help it seep through

Round here a brick lined shallow well like you describe would be for collecting rainwater off the roof, basically an underground storage tank for domestic use...nice soft water for washing laundry etc, the stuff from the deep wells is good hard water for drinking.

you could be right, all I remember was dad saying it never was the same after it was lined . Grant aided to pump to a headed tank to fill troughs . He said you could never keep the pump working.

suppose time it take to refill will suggest where it’s coming from. My eyes are peeled ?

This lot do solar pumps. About the only ones doing decent capacity ones in the uk as far as I could find, and they're local to me.
Think I shall run an armoured cable down though, as it's under 400m.

I have a well that I just siphon water out of to water troughs with ball valves lower down the fields. The tanks will be a little lower than the bottom of the well. The siphon breaks occasionally and then I connect the input side of an old worm drenching gun to the tank end of the delivery pipe to purge. I have also used 12v pump, permanently fitted to bottom of the delivery pipe, in the well and just powered it up with a battery to purge when needed.

Lucky man with gravity

Our well water has got ochre.

A shame because I would like to make a half acre salad garden next to it & use the well for irrigation.

Dad used to draw water for spraying from another well that fed this one, not a problem for spraying. Almost endless water out of this well where clay meets stone.
