Weaving GD user thread

I was pleasantly surprised how well my GD seemed to be drilling winter beans this year. Time will tell how they do, but the discs looked to be to be putting the beans in well, so long as the soil and straw wasn't building up on top of the press wheels. Unfortunately a bit of rain ruined that. I have just got some wheel scrapers to try if the weather gives it another chance.

I am growing wizard and didn't ask the seed cleaners to try screening out the very biggest seeds. In 10 ha I did get the odd bean wedged in the seed tube, but no blocked coulters and those few flicked out easy enough.

I switched to using a tine drill after it rained a bit, which surprisingly struggled this year. Turns out it can handle 8 to 10" tall wheat stubble a treat, 12" is testing it and >13" it becomes a regular bulldozing nightmare. Fingers crossed I'll get a weather window to finish the last couple of fields with the GD with wheel scrapers.

I pulled out a few times drilling beans, I find it just blows them on top
I did 25 acres with mine, I was pleased how it out them in. I think the rest will go in with the claydon now the weather has turned. How many acres are people doing before they need new bushes? I’ve done about 1200 acres with mine and it’s getting a bit loose

The only ones I've done are the Coulter pivot ones.
And they done about 4000 acres on my 3m, which was far too long, didn't know they were an every thousand acres job.
They're not expensive, or difficult to change.
There was none that were worn out, but the middle Coulter's were worse than the outers. There's a small amount of wear on the pins, which I reversed to wear on the opposite sides, and I left a bush in after grinding the top hat off, which might just mean it presses on more plastic, next time I may buy enough to do it with a new bush, and repin them at the same time.

I had demo with a gd, was very pleased how it went in but it did not grow well a all the germination was poor. But under the shade of a tree it grew well all I can say is the soil was dryer under the tree and created a better seed to soil contact.

Looks tidy, how do you get on with the scrapers? I haven’t got on mine, only had it this year and was mostly dry conditions
We fitted scrapers to our 4m mounted and to be honest, if the conditions warranted scrapers we found that it was too wet and that crop establishment would be poor.
I don't think it is possible to fit scrapers to our new GD, but there is greater clearance above the press wheel than on the previous drill, so it shouldn't block as easily.

Guess it could be this reason: Too many has too much pressure on the wheels! In wet conditions it smears/compacts the soil over the slot and it creates low oxygen and bad germination.
Just because the drill can lift the wide transport wheels free from the ground, it is not the meaning that you should do it!

Hi when I rolled the slot up it was like going mouldy where the seed was I am not sure but I did not think there was enough pressure on the slot too make good seed to soil contact.
